NH TC33Da 11 hours wouldn\'t start!

I took my brand spankin new tractor up to my Michigan property Saturday before the bad weather hit to have a bit of fun. The tractor ran great and I widened out a narrow trail I'd made this fall. Unfortunately, just as I was about to put the thing on the trailer & go home it wouldn't start. No turnover, no anything. It took me 1/2 an hour to realize that a little wire under the tractor below the seat had become diconnected. There are a couple of these wires just dangling under the machine just waiting to be snaged. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I feel this is a design flaw and I'm a bit pissed that a $20k tractor is so vulnerable. It's like the proverbial Achilies heel.

Re: NH TC33Da 11 hours wouldn\'t start!

There was a similar discussion a while back about a small wire coming off and disabling a much larger TN style machine.

I also piped in with the comment that with brush, and the stuff that these machines are designed to run thru.. that the precarious placement and routing of so many 'critical' wires is at least, poorly thought.. and at worst.. a possible design flaw. The connector style also may be an issue.. perhaps they should be some sort of shrouded twist lock style connection, rather than simple spade and terminal like many of them are. Course.. with a better connection.. if it snags.. it will probably rip a wire out of a sending unit instead of unplugging it. Sounds like wire guides and shields are VERY MUCH needed on many of these units. Perhaps they could have upped the cost about 20$ and threw in some flexible metal conduit and a few wire ties /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif?

I was relieved to find the connector seperated. If it had been more securely fastened it might have ripped the wiring out instead (then I would have been stuck for a while). I think I'll have one of my guys fabricate some sort of shieldig for it. I've got alot of brush clearing to do next year.

Hey, I am glad I saw this. I'm going to check and see where my wire is located and keep an eye on it.

That's my point.. it should have been more securely fastened so that it wouldn't be snagged in the first place. As in.. it should have had a shield, shroud, or loom that the wire ran in.. not dangling precariously above sticks and branches and debrie, etc.. under your tractor. That's just what you need.. a 10 cent wire disabling a 20,000.00 dollar tractor because someone didn't/couldn't take the time to properly and safely secure that wire.

Any of the stray wires I've found on my tractor were loomed in short order.

Reminds me of trucks where they sell skid plates if your going to drive off road. Could you put a "skid plate" on the Bommers?
