I have a chance to buy a used TC40DA, 100 hours, garaged, 17 LA FEL, brush guard, very clean. One year left on warranty. Owner no longer needs it. Owner is neighbor and takes very good care of machine (he takes good care of all his tools). I am very new to all of this and would like a method to get a rough idea of what would be a fair offer. Any help greatly appreciated. No other options. Basic machine (no SS, etc)

The DA models are pretty full featured models. They come with most optional items as standard on it. The 17 LA loader is used with TC40's equiped with the Supersteer feature, so you might want to check on that out a little further. If it is a non Supersteer it should be a 16 la loader. If it is a super Steer it should be the 17LA loader. As far as price goes, it varies quite a bit with where you are in the country. A large national retailer dealer has these new for around $21500 and can ship any where if you pay the price. This is probably 1-2 grand less than most other dealer. If you could pick it up for around 20-21 grand, I think you would be getting a good deal as long as it is as clean as you say it is.

Have you asked him how much he wants for it?

Thanks for the reply!!!!!!!!!!!!
Feedback is needed and appreciated!

I have not asked him about price. I hate to get into suggesting a price to low and getting into "hurt" feelings. I am going to try it next week and then we will talk "Turkey".

Bob, you also said it was a "DA" model. That would make it a hydrostatic transmission and almost all the nice options. If it's a basic tractor, is there a chance it's gear instead of hydro? That would significantly effect the price.

If it is a TC40DA, I'd offer around $20k since you know it's basically a new machine, hardly broke in. If it is Supersteer and the 17LA loader, I think $500 more would be fair. Even at those prices, I'd be beholding to my neighbor and surely use the tractor to help him or loan it to him when needed. You won't lose anything but a year's warranty on that deal and you'll be getting a great tractor at a bargain price. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yes, it is a DA. I maybe confused on the FEL 17LA. I will double-check that. I am sure it is not a SS (he made that clear). 20 K is a good offer? That is good to know. I really don't want to damage my relationship with him. His friendship means more to me than the tractor. Friends mean more than "things".

Doc_bob,

Others have already given you an idea on price so all I have to say is.........BUY THAT TRACTOR. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif If it's been garaged it's gotta look practically new at 100 hours. Don't know if you had a chance to take her for a whirl or not. These machines are truly DREAM machines. If you get it, I can guarantee you, your going to love it.

Hope things work out for you....and remember you will owe us pics if she becomes yours !!

Thanks for the encouragement. I will give it a test drive this weekend (weather permitting) and then I will also go a dealer for NH in the AM to just learn about options, MSRP, etc.

PS Pics will be coming!

FWIW, the 2006 Tractor Blue Book lists a '05 TC40DA w/hydro (tractor alone) at $19,210 Average Retail, and $20,090 High Retail (low hours, very clean). If that's anywhere near accurate and the loader is included ($3K+), then it would seem to me like a fine buy at anything under $21K. At $20K or less it would seem to be a steal, but then you're spending your money, not mine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Dealer High Trade-In is $16,780 per the book.

Thanks for your reply. It is very helpful to get this kind of advice. I know of no place where this can be found! I will be trying the machine in the PM! A few hours doing some FEL work on soft ground. Wish me luck! I wil probably love the machine! Then the hard part, making the deal.

The owner of the TC 40D came over with his 40D this AM. He lives just a few blocks down the road. I spent 1 1/2 hours moving dirt and wood chips around. WOW!!! I compared it to a 20 HP tractor (from memory) and as expected, more power is a good thing. More done in less time with less effort. I paid him for the time (fuel, wear and tear, etc.). He walked me through the operation, technique.

I can see why people like tractors. Is there such a thing as too much tractor? Would 50 HP make me smile more? I am hooked!!!!!

I told my friend that I am still looking at other tractors. Made it clear that my biggest concern is losing our friendship if we cannot agree on a price. I would rather have his friendship than the tractor. He understood my feelings and made it clear, it is just business.

Well, I will look at some other tractors and then make him an offer (assuming it remains in first place).

Thanks to everyone for your advice.
