Haggling with a friend is never as much fun and is much more uncomfortable to do than with a stranger. However, remember these things work both ways. He needs to feel like he was treated fairly on the price, but you have to be willing to grit your teeth and smile if the tractor blows a $4000 transmission a week after the warranty runs out. LOL!
As for size, I'd think a 40 hp tractor would be plenty of machine for an inexperienced operator, unless you actually plan to farm with it. Most people with smaller acreages get along just fine with something in the 30-40 hp range, which is easier to store, easier to drive, much easier to transport, and does less damage if you make a little mistake handling it than a 50-80 hp machine.
