Nickames

There were no nicknames I'd encountered during my youth but there were a lot once I joined the Navy. And, just like the military, they were practically Standard Issue based on surnames:

'Pony' Moore
'Soupy' Campbell
'Spider' Webb
'Dogs' Boddy
'Santa' Clausen
and mine was the standard 'Tug' Wilson... which would last until they learnt my actual Christian name, which is "Randy". Randy is a slang word for being horny; it trumps 'Tug' every time!

No nicknames for me or any of my associates that I grew up with. I proudly use my real name in my emails.

I have nieces and nephews that were giving nicknames before they were ever born, or maybe even named by their parents. I had a brother that past a couple of years ago whose name was Myron, but was given the nickname Mouse. About half the people that knew him never knew his real name.

I quite understand that... but, based on your surname, your Navy nickname would be 'Chook'.

Possibly 'Guinea' or 'Ducks'.

My late uncle called me 'Mr Magoo' after the '70's cartoon character, said I looked like him as a baby... the Mr got dropped, and I hated the name as a kid. Once I got older, I grew to realize it was a term of endearment, and would give anything to hear Uncle Ed call me that again... he's been gone since 2004, I miss him every day.

I also often got called Magiver, after the 80's TV character who could do anything with nothing and drove a jeep, and lately, my buddy and I use 'Wally' for anybody anytime, universally.

I often call my youngest boy 'Boots' as he hates to wear sneakers, and wears his boots all the time, no matter what... grins from ear to ear when I say it, cause I also wear boots 98% of the time.

Kids can be cruel, and most of us had to put up with the crappy nicknames to some extent. It's part of life and growing up. As they say, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger...you learn to ignore it after awhile. I had extremely curly hair most of my life (still do, but not quite as thick as it used to be) so I had the nickname in some circles as "N.....Hair"; also was called "Dogleg", as it bears a remote semblance to my real name.

I remember some old Chevy Chase movie where he is thrown in a jail cell with a very large unsavory looking character who immediately wants Chevy's character to Ben Dover. Of course Mr. pratfall idiot extends his hand, and says "Glad to meet you Ben".

About 40 years ago I was looking in the phone book for a contact whose last name was Head. You do remember phone books don't you? Anyway, as I was going down through the listings there was a "Richard". I wonder what his Army buddies called him?

I am sure some nick names were derived from malice, but in most of my childhood someone came up with a clever name and it stuck....

One of my friends was nick named DJ cause his mom was always saying DAMMITJEFFEY, and so DJ stuck, another friend, babyray, he was a small guy and his name was ray, my last name was the name of a wild animal, so of course someone called me Animal once, and it stuck......

Navy nickname would be 'Stiffy'. We had a bloke whose last name was Hardman, same nickname.
