Dan - She was jerked off her feet when he grabbed her backpack but hung on and kicked him in the crotch when he spun around (which was apparently okay with the police) then in the throat when he doubled over (which was not okay with the cops as he was having trouble breathing). He didn't struggle much after that.

Several eyewitnesses spoke to the cops (of course she didn't understand a word of it), and afterwards they were very polite to her. The fact that she had some scrapes on her forearm from the fall worked in her favor. Self-defense, etc.

Good for her Pete! Amsterdam is notorious for pick pockets. My wife is there half a dozen times a year, flight attendant, and it is standard practice for the gals to leave wedding rings in the hotel safe and not wear much jewelry or carry purses when going out. Of course it isn't much better in New York City.

Glad she is alright, and didn't run afoul of any issues with the authorities. It gladdens the heart to hear about the "under dog" getting the up hand. Apparently this mugger got more then he bargained for.

One initial blow and a follow-up in combination does not seem to me like excessive force. Excessive is when you've already incapacitated 'em and you keep beatin' on 'em for a while.

I don't know, seems like continuing is just making sure they have an extended life lesson about why their initial action was not a wise move in the first place.. unch:

Agreed. Mostly this is by people who are not involved, haven't lost anything and were not at risk.

Its unfair to judge someone whose adrenalin is up to defend themself then fails to shut it off at just the right moment to satisfy people who are not involved.

I suppose this is even difficult for professionals (law enforcement) but they do have more training in the matter. It is appropriate for a professional to know when to stop but I can imagine it might be difficult because things are happening fast.

The cops were probably just concerned about the extra paperwork that would be involved in case he died on 'em.
