Over on the "dry side" - Spokane County - I only burn in the winter or early spring. Just too much chance of things spreading into the dry underbrush & trees.

Here in NY, we have the DUMBEST new law. About five years ago, because some clowns near NYC burned down part of their town, the state enacted a burn ban in the spring. It lasts until June 1. They say it's so all the dead stuff can green up and thus be less susceptible to burn. So, we're allowed to burn -in fact legally encouraged- in the dry summer but not at all when the ground is sopping wet from snow melt in the spring. It's an unfortunate result of being in the same state as NYC. We get 10+ feet of snow in a season, and our ground is saturated for months every spring, but can't burn.

Add to that, that by the time I can burn the limb piles from the winter timber, birds are trying to nest in them and rabbits have set up camp. I really hate burning animals out of their home.

As for that night shot, here's one I love. I had to buy R1 tires to replace the turfs that came on my Deere 4610 when I bought it used. I had made do with the turfs for several years, but when I wanted to turn a sod field, the turfs didn't have the traction. I sold some stuff (like my 3 pt snowblower) and saved for quite a while and bought new wheels and tires. I was so happy to have a tractor that looked like a "real" tractor, that I worked into the night and when they were on I didn't wait to take the picture.

By the time I was able to plow that field, there was snow on it. Thank God for the late winter this past year!

I don't much care for doing things at night. The days are long enough as it is. I'm not afraid of the dark-It's because there's things out back that will eat you if given the chance. If I have to go to the barn or move a tractor after sunset, I take a dog and carry a sidearm.

Mark,

Here in South Kitsap County we are not allowed to burn at night. I cheat sometimes when the flames have died and no wind forecast. I have 3 piles started for 10' Diameter burns. I always wait for rain, my woods are too close.

Hi Ron... you got me thinking (and sweating a bit too) trying to be legal so I went and reread my permit. Says you can't start a fire before sunrise and you can't 'add material after sunset'. I haven't been adding but I admit I have pushed the pile together. I'm on my third day and haven't had to relight it... just stir up the coals and then add a few more. This should be the last night of active burning. I do have a four huge stumps that are too big to get to the pile so they will sit in my newly created stump garden.

Here are a few from early 2014 when I had 65 heifers calving. They're of the RTV, hope that counts.

This week, Saturday afternoon ran into Sunday morning. Happened to look down at just the right time to catch the tractor rolling 1600 hours while mowing hay.

Mark, Down here they also ban stumps from burn piles so sweat again. I cheat on that also for ones my BX will lift. I have had stumps burn for days.
