Nikon Digital Camera 5700 Or 8700 Comments?

Mike:

I don't quite remember 7, but I believe the user interface is very similar. There are a bunch of new features, mostly related to digital photography. If you do buy it, there is an upgrade to 8.1 on the website.

Congrads on the 8700. You will like it. I don't know what you paid, but I see they have dropped under $800 already at a number of sites.

BTW I got a good price for my 5700.

Mike, a little curious why you went with the camera you went with. I should think that if you are shooting with Lights, umbrellas etc., you would want to have the desire to have some contol over DOF. My main reason for going with a DSLR was to gain as much control of DOF as I could. That was something severely lacking in the Nikon 900 I had and for the most part still is in most small sensor cameras. If a small DOF is not what you want or would ever need, then I completely understand your desire to have a P&S type camera. The simplicity and other functions unique to them makes it a very desireable way to go. Rat...

Rat I have been very pleased overall with the performance of the point & shoot Nikon 900. It has performed well for the past several years and I was quite comfortable with the digital shots that it produced. I would not be upgrading now if the 900 had not become unreliable. Most of my shots are taken within a foot or two of the subject and the rest in the macro mode. The simplicity of the 8700 also made it a very appealing upgrade to me. I'm guessing that the 8700 has got to be about 8 times better than the 900 so it should easily satisfy my current needs.

Paul sorry I missed your earlier post. As you know the Nikon 8700 is shipped without media card. Most 1 GB cards that I saw were about $279.00 + tax
I got the complete outfit, everything as mentioned above for $1000.00 and did not have to pay tax at the source which saved me another 60 or so bucks. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm glad you got a good price on the 5700 I came real close to buying it from you. Did you sell it at eBay?

Yes it sold on eBay (a friend has an account).

I opted for 4 256 meg CF cards rather than the microdrive. The price was a wash, and the startup time, higher power requirements and fear of damage from a drop steered me away from the microdrive. Having 4 CFs lets me switch them by subject or trip. Also I got a $ 10 PCMCIA card that lets me stick the card into coworkers laptops for a quick look or download.

You may want to pick up a 256 card for $ 45 just to have as a backup.
