No cell service EITHER from home router OR cell towers

Had the darndest issue start early today about 1:40 am, my Verizon Droid lost ALL cell coverage and although it was connected to my home wifi router, I couldn't get a data connection until a few minutes ago. I can understand losing coverage for a few minutes, but never for five hours when I routinely get 3 bars of 3G coverage here....anybody have an idea why such a long service outage would happen? Thanks.

Yesterday from about 4-6pm we were without Internet service, Verizon also

Maybe a problem or maintenance on your closest tower. Problem with data chip on phone. Accidentally put phone in airplane mode?
Did you shut off and reset?

I am thinking probably maintenance at the tower closest to me (5-6 miles) because of the timeframe. I had it on wifi mode the entire time, the cell coverage indicator was all white, normally it is blue and a 3G or 4G symbol appears as well as an indication of signal strength. There were no signals or symbols until the cell coverage indicator lit up blue.
