My little old NH TN70A started up with no problems in 10 degree weather in less than a 1/2 second. It was cold!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have a bunch of diesels at work and some of them have automatic glows (the glow plugs come on automatically for some amount of time - I think it is supposed to be "smart"). We've had to let them "glow" two or three times before the motors want to fire - it's only been in the 20s...

I need to use my glow plugs year round... about 30 seconds in summer, closer to a minute now. Could be a symptom of a problem I don't want to know about? :(

My owner's manual specifies 45 seconds of plugging in good weather, more when it's cold out. That said, the other day I had to take the trash out and our gas lawn tractor (used to pull trailers and such) wouldn't start, so I gave the kubota 45 seconds of plug and it fired right up. It was about 15*F.

My Bobcat with 56hp Kubota must have a sensor since the LED on the dash counts down the seconds for the glow plugs depending on temperature. Below 0 degrees it counts down from 39 secs but up around 25 degrees it counts down from 16 seconds or so.

Hey Doc,
I would say that would make for a happy tractor owner in those temps ! :) When it gets down around zero or below my old Massey can take up to 2 minutes, but it still starts, cant compalin too much ;) I could probablly improve performance with a new set of glow plugs !

The poor thing was COLD and in a hurry to warm up. At that temperature, just about everything I own would be frozen!

On my JD, it's glow about 1 to 2 seconds in summer and 4 seconds in winter.

JD elects to install no glow plug light. So, one turns switch all the way to "start" and holds it with transmission selector or PTO ON. Then put transmission selector into N or turn PTO off, and it starts with about a half turn of the crankshaft.

The 24 year old Benz takes about 2 to 6 seconds in summer and about 6 to 10 seconds in winter. It still starts with about a half turn of the crankshaft, as long as all at least 3 glow plugs are working. When 2nd glow plug burned out recently, glow plug light didn't come on. Would still start on 2 cylinders, but you just needed to count before turning switch to "start". (First time in 24 years that this happened. Don't know how long it'd been starting on 3 cylinders.)

Ralph,I've been wondering about glow plugs on my 4110 I don't remember seein anything in the manual about them I thought I read on here somewhere that you just turned the key to the on position and wait for about 3 seconds then do it over again if you think you need more time.Thats what I did all last winter and so far this winter.I guess I'm starting her without the glow plugs huh?

My TN75D starts at 0 with no assist and no block heater. Same thing less than 1/2 second. BTW, the TN's don't have glow plugs. They have a Thermal Assist which heats up the fuel if you push the button.
