Well I have a bit of advice that I aquired the the hard way recently. If you have a piano to move you should Always hire a professional. My fiance has this HUGE piano that is (was) a family heirloom aparently and had to have it moved from a storage area to our garage. Being notoriously cheap I opted to move the aforementioned piano with a gehl 4640 skidsteer instead. Well all was well slid right under with forks strapped it ever so carefully around the mast to front of the piano and proceeded to load it on my 18 ft dovetail 10 k trailer. Well apparently despite the fact that the piano was too heavy to budge by hand it was fairly delicately built in the rear of the instrument, So as I was carefully loading onto the ramps it lurched back and the mast which is MUCH better constructed than the back of the piano held firm while piano crashed backwards against the tires of the skidsteer. Now I am fairly certain the repairs to this wonderful instrument will EXCEED by far the original estimate that the piano mover gave me of 700.00 . Well the good news if there is any was noone was hurt and the wedding will still occur , albeit sometime after the repairs to the piano are completed. So I guess the moral of the story is always hire a professional when you know nothing about what you are doing /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

LOL, I moved our upright once and swore never to attempt to move it again after that, moving the Browning Gun Fire Safe was easier than that.

Glad to hear no one was injured.

Back in my college days, I'd do about anything for beer money. That included moving a few piano's.

The LAST one I moved was a bit of a laugher. We had plenty help. It was an upright player piano. It didn't work, but the buyer wanted it in her basement for decoration. No matter why, it was $50 each for the move!

Figuring gravity would be our biggest "foe" in getting it down the steps, we put 4 on the down-stairs side, and 2 people on top.

You'd think 6 college seniors would have thought to use a tape measure, wouldn't you?

Half-way down the steps, it wedges in place. She won't go DOWN the steps, so let's go back up. Won't move that way either. And we have 4 unsuspecting souls trapped in the basement.

4 hours, 2 sledge hammers, a skill saw, 3 crow bars, and a case of Budweiser later, all of us made it to daylight.

We ended up paying for the piano we destroyed. (Coincidentally, $50 each)

Moe, Larry, Curly, Sam, Austin, and Bills Piano Moving Service was officially de-commissioned at that point.

I also had the misfortune of getting involved with a piano move. I had no idea that they were so heavy. Hopefully the nuptials will go off as planned.

We (really my wife) bought our first piano at a place that restores and sells used pianos. Great deal. They guaranteed they would buy back at the original price if we ever wanted to sell and pick-up/delivery was free. After 7 years at living at our house we decided to move. After helping my brother move his piano a couple of years earlier, I swore I would never move a piano again. We called the company up, they bought our old piano and picked it up for free as promised. We (my wife) still wanted a piano, so we had store credit for awhile. It was a couple of months before we could move into our new house, so once we (my wife) were ready we went and picked out another piano and they delivered that one for free. We (my wife) wanted a better piano this time around, so we did spend a little more money. However, the part of not having to touch either one, which included quite a few stairs, was well worth it.

P.S. I actually can't stand pianos, has to do with being forced to play for a few years as a kid. My mom said I'd regret quiting, but never have. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I know she was pretty mad since it was her mothers but whats a guy to do 700 for a 15 mile move seemed really steep and I had the skid steer for free and I owned the trailer so it seemed logical . That thing was unbelievably heavy. she IS however still willing to go on my cruise to the carribean so i guess its cool /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A cruise....in the Carribean....hmmmm. Before you leave for the cruise make sure she doesn't have any concrete blocks and chain in the suitcase. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
