I put myself thru college repairing, rebuilding, and refinishing pianos. I made a lot of money as I was the only person in the area who would take apart a player piano action and rebuild it. I never claimed to be smart but I was smart enough to hire someone to move every piano I ever worked on.

I've only moved one, it's an upright, and I moved it from one wood floored room to another on the same floor - and it had wheels on it - and I'll never do it again!

OK, this post made me laugh, and login...
Several years ago my wife bought a grand piano, and the lady she bought it from insisted that we hire professional piano movers to move it. In walks Larry, Moe, and Curly.
To get it out of the house, they had to take in on a deck and down some stairs. They put 2 below and 1 above. Sensing they needed help, I ran out the other door and around the house to help on the lower side. When I got around the house, they were removing the piano from ontop of the two lower guys. fortunately, not too much damage, and I didn't have them pay.
Since then, I have moved it myself without trouble. If there are not more than 1 stair that can be ramped, it is really quite easy to move.
I have also helped move a heavy player piano into a basement. That was a job.

Well - I paid professionals to move a piano - (actually my wife paid them - I said I could do it with a few friends help - but that's another story)
I wasn't there when they picked it up, but I was at home when they showed up at the end of my 300' gravel driveway with a 53' moving van and zero chance of getting it up the drive. 3 Guys pushed the **** thing up the gravel drive on the stupid little caster wheels on the bottom. Then they wrestled it up the front steps and into place. It sure got a good shaking coming up the drive, and we got a nice doorknob shaped hole in the wall behind the door, but they got it in place. Funniest thing though - they couldn't turn their truck around on our road, so proceeded up the switchback hill behind us, promptly getting stuck on the corner and had to call the recovery service to pull them out. Not sure how they explained 3 guys taking 9 hours to move a piano 2 miles, never mind the loss they must have taken on the tow.

You may be familiar with my piano then. I have a 1926 Steinway L (over 6' long) with Duo Art reproducer. You know how much THAT weighs!
I spent 20 years in the entertainment business and have personally moved my pianos around for years, but when I inherited this wonderful piano, I had someone else move it. I wasn't about to lift that monster at around 800# or better. Besides, it's now worth way too much to risk my older body letting go and watching it bounce off something and probably cracking the sound board!
I've been waiting for 4 years for the refinisher and the player rebuilder to finish! I may never get to hear it play again.
