The engine should feel warm, hot actually. So hot that you cannot leave your hand on the block. If it's only luke warm or cool, something is wrong, regardless of what the guage says. When the engine is hot, ie. normal operationg temperature, the guage should read about mid-scale. I'd check for the stuck thermostat ball. Mine took almost 2 years to show up, but it could have just as easily have happened after the first time I used the tractor. Unless a new t'stat is different from the original, I think it's just as likely to fail again. Also, maybe recheck the bypass problem, by pinching off the little drain hose with some vise grips or some type of clamp..

Jimmer: I agree and dont want to pull my hair out. I did check the light on the dash by grounding it it works fine-The valve on the bottom is definitly off, we alos replaced the other valve with a new shut off type so it is closed at both sides. It also has the new gauge that works perfect(tested in the water bowl)and it makes no heat-the t-sta must be inspected, just tired of waiting to resolve it-glad to hear that one does warm up after a short running time, the engine is cold to the touch also !!

grainger, I hope I didn't offend with the fluid level question. It's sometimes easy to overlook the obvious. I do it all the time !!

If your saying you're always THAT cold ... something is really amiss. I'm stumped. Good t'stat and blocked radiator and the engine is still cold to the touch ??? Hope someone has the answer.

Grainger, My 35D was running on dead cold also until I pinched off the bypass with a good ole pair of vise grips and the guage went to middle green which is 180. It wouldn't even move a bit after I let it sit and idle for 45min!!! I installed a ball valve in the hose to take care of it and after running the tractor hard it never moved from center green. I did go to the dealer and talked to him about it. He went back and asked the mechanic and he told me to check and make sure that the thermostat is put on correctly. He said that there is a needle in the thermostat that pops up and down and to make sure it is facing the valves and not the front of the tractor. Since my problem was solved the bypass line I never had to go any farther but I figured maybe it will help you. Hope this helps, Don

First-Thanks to all for the comments, I am fairly certain I have a t-stat problem. The ball in the lower by-pass hose is fixed and it cant get by there, the radiator is new and full of nice clean anti-freeze and looks to really circulate well.I think the new stat-replaced only a few weeks ago by the dealer i either stuck open or has the little ball issue-I am just tired of it and want it right. The dealer is working on it today and we will see how it goes-Thanks

I got my TC40D 10 days ago (2001 with 34hours already on it), aware before I bought it that it may have some cool-running problems.

Yesterday morning, it was 25 degrees and, after running for an hour moving logs at 1500-2000 rpm, the temp guage was just below green. Actually, in my 10 hours of seat time, the guage has been in the green (barely) just once.

After checking the TBN site, I found a picture of the bypass valve installation and the suggestions to try clamping the hose to see if it helped. I used a nylon Quik-Grip c-clamp and CAREFULLY sqeezed the hose.

IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! Within 5 minutes the needle was on the white line in the center of the green zone. I used it for an hour after that and kept a close eye on the guage. I swear I could see the thermostat opening and closing: the needle would creep above the white mark and, all of a sudden, it would drop to just below the center mark and stablize - VERY cool!! (or hot.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif)

Though used, my tractor is still under warranty. I plan to have the dealer fix this with the other (expected - thank you, TBN) problems I am having.

Mark

Mark : you should have few problems if any,the by pass issue is an easy fix. Just a note after removing the tstat at lunch, it was stuck wide open, this is a brand new New Holland genuine tstat.Dealer gave me another new one and WALLAAH it works like a champ.removed the cardboard headed up back to plow some snow and it stayed at 180 the whole time. Lets hope this does it-LLoyd

LLoyd, glad to hear it's fixed, but as I mentioned earlier, mine was fine for two years. It was installed correctly, but I honestly don't think that matters. If NH put in another one like the others, the potential for the problem to occur is great. If it does, I'd do the fix. Cut off the ball, put a rivet in the hole, and drill a new 1/16'' hole. Good luck.

Maybe someone will find a replacement t'stat that doesn't have the silly little ball part.

This new one got the de-ball treatment, and a new hole with rivet in old hole so that will cure that. Still like yu mentioned the potential is there. I believe(like you) that the quality is poor on this series of stats. Hope its over for a while.
