No, I am NOT going to try to take down a dead 100' Hickory tree!

I don't post here very often obviously, but I've done that, and I've done it with a combination of things that people have suggested here. Respect it, but you don't need to fear it. There are some things you can try that I believe are safe that will start to mitigate the dangers that tree presents. I started by getting a rope and pulling a tow strap around the branches where they are still somewhat stout but where you get some Leverage. Jeep Rubicon anchored at the rear and a 10,000 pound winch double line. Obviously extend that line as needed to where you're outside of the line of fall. Branch at a time, within a couple days I had the tree down safely and I had some pretty cool videos to boot.

Start stacking all your limbs and brush and whatever around the base and when you get a good pile burn it.
Years ago, no longer gave that property due to divorce, I had a dead tree that didn’t branch out until much higher. About 25’ tall. Before you ask me why it was allowed to be dead do long still standing—that is a question for previous owner. It was dead when we bought the place.
Long story shorten, after getting the former pasture area clean up, I did as this post suggest, I piled dead fall that I was nit going to cut for firewood around this tree. First fire had better results than I hoped for. We had a hot hot bonfire and fire works show all night. Next morning there was a very small pile near a small stump from a tree that was approximately 30” diameter. That evening when home from work, stump was below ground level.

I've got a massive oak tree in my front yard that's dead and needs to come down. I am gonna have to climb it and take it down from the top down. Worst of all is it's right next to large power lines. Not looking forward to it...
Utility company should want to trim it back, unless it is considered your service line.

If it’s hollow, I’ve seen folks pour about a gallon or two of diesel inside, let it soak, and light it up. Takes a couple of days but it will come down.

I don't care if it's dropping branches the diameter of my thigh.

I don't have the tools and I don't have the experience.

And I don't have the money to hire anyone to do it, nor do I want heavy trucks in the yard.

I guess I just have to avoid the area for the next year or six until enough of it drops off to no longer be a threat.

No risk to house or shed, so no issue there. Probably take out a couple of other smaller trees, but I don't care about them either.

Maybe get a quote to just drop it and let it lay. I've found most of the cost of tree removal is the cutting up, chipping and stump grinding.

Have you tried getting some estimates for taking it down? You might be surprised. We've had the same guy take down four trees for us over the last five years. Three threatened the house, one the garage. Emerald ash borer got to two of them, wild grape strangled the roots of another, and the fourth was a poor choice of a fast-growing species that should never have been planted next to a building. We did the clean-up, which reduced the cost considerably.
BTW, if someone gets hurt by a branch falling from that tree, even if they are on your property without express permission, don't expect your liability insurance to pick up the tab. The insurance company will claim a "responsible" owner would have had the known hazard removed prior to the event.
