Hunter,
Hang in there, you've got alot of support here, looks like others may benefit from this thread as well with their own demons.

Don't know if cope is as bad as cigs addiction but them things are straight from the devil, I hate cigarettes but I do smoke a few cigars a week so I guess that's almost as bad.
Tried chaw once when I was about 10, didn't know you weren't supposed to swallow the juice, when I got home my mother said I looked green, you can guess the rest.

Worst thing for me now is my 16 year old son is smoking cigarettes and we don't know what to do with him, as tough as life is now, to see him starting off with an addiction really hurts.

Hang in there, keep finding things to do to take your mind off it.

Good Luck, JB.

I chewed Red Man pouch tobacco when I was late teens to 30. I smoke 1.5 packs a day from age 20 and quit on my 30th birthday. I chewed nicotine gum for about 6 months. That was more than 34 years ago. I quite the tobacco shortly thereafter and for me after quitting the cigarettes, quitting the chewing was a piece of cake. To me the smoking was much more addictive.

Mrs. Alan L. can't seem to quit. She says she has quit and next thing I know she is sneaking around smoking.

Good luck. You will never regret quitting, but could certainly regret not quitting.

Thanks for sharing your experience, looks like you won the war and I'm still fighting the battle; but this time I think I am going to win!

Take Eddie's story and change his name to mine. Plus, make it US Navy, cigarettes, and a 2-1/2 pack-a-day habit over 29 years, and you have my story. Also add that every 5 words I'd say, I had to pause and cough. In January 1998, I got mad at the mess and mostly mad at myself enough to quit. It was the hardest thing I ever did, but the thing that has made me happiest until I met my wife, Kathy.

No matter how hard it is, just concentrate on the joy of being free from that grip of tobacco. It's worth it. For me, cold turkey and absolute abstinence was the key to success. I don't think I could have quit any other way.

When I first read Eddie's story, I thought about all the similarities to mine, except (1) it was smoking instead of dipping, and (2) I haven't gotten 65 pounds over weight; only 50. And the worst part is that I haven't gotten it under control and lost my big belly yet.

I'm in the same 50lb boat as you are Bird. Kind of snuck up on me over the last couple years. Hoping I'll be able to benefit from an increased lung capacity this spring and get some much needed outdoor excercise. Just seems like I'm hungry all the time. Quitting was definitely worth it though.

I tried chewing Red Man and Beechnut back when I was younger, thought that maybe it would help me cut down on cigarettes. Stuff gave me the hiccups like you wouldn't believe. Guess I was lucky for that, only left me one bad habit to break later on.

I did forget one thing. PEPPERMINTS! I never get far from a bag of Brach's Starlight peppermint candies. I can keep one disc in my mouth for at least 2 hours, sometimes longer. I put one in my mouth over an hour ago and it is just sitting there giving me minty fresh breath.:D That's what you want. Don't panic! You don't want your mouth to taste like tobacco. The habit wants that, but you are putting the habit away for good.:)
