I have been gifted a YM165D Yanmar that has been sitting for 8 years. It only has 300Hours on it but it still has some problems. It still had all fluids intact so I drained all of them and refilled and put in new filters, Oil, fuel, Front gear box. The tractor was missing the starter and the oil filter during its long rest. I got a new starter and the engine cranks, but no oil ever reaches the oil filter. I don't want to keep cranking or try to bleed the fuel system fully to try to start the thing because I don't want to damage anything because of the oil situation. Does any one know what to do when no oil is getting to the oil filter?

Does it have an oil pressure guage, does it move any while you are turning it over? Dirt dobbers around here will stop up any holes. Was/is there anything blocking passage to oil filter? I would make sure it was in non-start position (throttle pulled all the way closed, fuel sol. disconnected {if it has one}), and then turn engine over till oil flows out. Pull valve cover to see if upper end is oiling. Pulling injectors will make turning engine over easier. Pulling tractor in gear with vehicle or another tractor will save wear on your starter. May have to pull pan and check to make sure oil pickup screen is not stopped up. And of course the obvious question, does it have enough oil in it to begin with? Let us know what you find.

I would definitely do any cranking using the compression release, until this is sorted out.

If the starter was missing then the previous owner may have damaged it by cranking too long - so there may have been a problem when it last ran.

About all you can do is pull the oil pump and see if it works.

I would remove and clean the oil valve behind the filter, attempt to blow compressed air through it, pull pan and clean the screen, Flush with diesel/kerosene, whatever it takes. Crank only with decompression engaged.

Tractor has a oil light but no pressure gauge. Oil is filled a beyond the dip stick level. I took oil pan off and cleaned the suction screen (Suction screen wasn't clogged but I cleaned it anyway). Cranked 30 second no oil. I removed and cleaned the oil valve behind the filter. Cranked again with decompression engaged. No oil. I then removed the oil valve behind the filter and cranked it without it or the filter on no oil. Took off the oil inlet pipe crank a little still no oil. Sounds like I have a oil pump problem. I have never tackled a oil pump any advice or cautions? Thanks Dan

Just find it, analize it, and fix it.

I have had the oil pump off on many gas engines where the distributor has a shaft that drives the oil pump, but I haven't had an oil pump off any diesel. I wish I could help sorry, I can't. If you have any mechanical ability , It shouldn't be too hard to make the repair. It does sound like the problem is with the oil pump or whatever turns the oil pump. Good luck

The oil pump may have also lost its prime. Find the oil pump take it apart to check components for excessive wear, broken parts...etc, then put it back together submerge or pour oil into it to get oil going between the gears so it can create a suction.
If it is like a auto engine then you can spin it over by hand to see if it will pump.
If possible after you get the pump to pumpin try to pump oil through the motor before letting it start to get a good film of oil on everything after all this motor has set-up for eight years.

I just had a realization. You have to FILL the filter with oil before installation to prime the pump. Try that, then crank with decompression engaged and see if you get oil pressure.

Thanks for the advice. But I now have the engine taken off some many parts from the motor I might as well keep going.
