i just bought a ym 240 2 wd green. it starts runs drives great. lift works smoothly, just doesn't seem to have a slot for 2nd gear, its labeled 4 gears and reverse with a 2 speed rear end. it goes in to all gears except second. not a huge problem but would be nice to have 2nd gear. any help more than appreciated. thanks, hp

probably going to have to pull the top off and take a look. Never heard of 2 speed rear end

I think you may be talking about a 2 speed PTO

I think he is talking about the High/Low range shift lever down beside the gear shifter.

Ok, makes sense. Just throwing me on the 2 speed rear end

See #14, 15, 25, 27 in this Hoye diagram. Those shifter forks are moved by the underside of the shift lever to engage various gears.

Pull the top off the transmission and see why the shift lever isn't working as expected. A fork could be bent etc if it won't go into 2nd gear.

These things are real simple to work on.

Look through Hoye's diagrams to see what you should find inside.

(YM2000 described in that set of diagrams, is the Japan-market version of YM240. Hoye's YM240 pages aren't as detailed. But YM2000/YM240 are the same tractor, aside from a few YM240 changes to meet US safety specs).

ok i took off the top cover and all looked to be fine. then took off the whole top cover as an assembly, seems the main shaft that the forward gears slide on has a burr on it. the gear will slide up to it but not past it , the burr that is. is this some thing i can file or am i just going to cause a speedy death of my trans? thanks, hp

Wait for more opinions from people who know something :D but I would just file it down, polish the area smooth, and put it back in service. Obviously, keep filings out of the transmission etc.

These old Yanmars are rub-two-sticks-together primitive technology, and perfectly suitable for such shadetree repairs. It should be good for another 30 years.

If something gouged that shaft then there may be some foreign object in the transmission, maybe part of a chipped gear. I would flush the transmission case (pour diesel in the fill hole and watch it drain out the filter's opening) and clean or replace the filter screen.
