No sound on computer

Still at it eh? :)

Your laptop should have a hardware mute button that controls the final audio output. Often times this is hidden with your function keys. Typically there is a picture of a speaker similar to the windows speaker icon. If you find it on a function key you will need to press the Function Key + the "F_" key. The red "X" in your system tray should go off and on when you are doing this.

HP Pavillion dv6-6c54nr laptop.Have tried restart. Mute button seems not to work as it just shows speaker and volume icons on screen but bottom of screen icon has red x on speaker.

Is it really a red X or is it a red circle with a slash through it?

From what you have provided it sounds like you have turned the sound off. Look across the top of the key board, on the right, above the +- key you should see a light burning on a key with a speaker on it with a round circle with a diagonal line. Depress the key and turn the light back off and you should have sound. The keys to the left of this key are for reducing or increasing the volume of the speaker. Unless the laptop is equipped with Win 8 and one of the "Touch Screens", touching the screen will not turn the sound back on.

If all suggestions have not worked, go to the >Device manager look for and click >sound device, look closely to see if there is a exclamation mark over the top of it, if so click and open and read what is written inside the box, if it states device is working properly then it's not a driver issue, although if it reads cannot start device then you may have to reload the sound driver, by uninstalling the driver and reboot the computer, the great thing about windows 7 is once it detects there is a missing driver for a component it will find and load it, (most of the time) though if the driver stops working it rarely alerts of it, and then must troubleshoot the problems,

If there is a red X ( not a circle with a slash) then the audio adapter is disabled. go into your "My computer" if xp just right click and go into device manager, then find your audio adapter, highlight it and right click and enable if disabled, if it shows enabled try disabling and then re- enabling it.

If windows 7 double click "computer" then look at the headers for "system properties" click on that then choose "device manager" and proceed as above.

Let us know how that works out.
