Hey everyone,

I'm finally going to bite the bullet and buy a 5-6 foot 'real' no till drill. I was looking hard at the Genesis by RTP but think after careful consideration the choice for me is a Great Plains/Land Pride 3P606NT with all 3 seed boxes (regular, small, nwsg with agitator) and weight brackets, for a couple of reasons.

1. tried and true, darn near every 'real' farmer knows GP or LP. From what I know they've been a standard for decades, millions of acres. On the other hand, few if any of them have ever heard of 'Genesis'. resale value has to be better with the GP (i'm fickle)
2. i've found a used 3pNT606 locally with all boxes and 20 acres on it for a good price - only 1k more than a genesis
3. genesis 5 ft vs GP 6 foot (same weight essentially i believe)
4. genesis touts one seed box as an advantage (cost savings, complexity). how could it be that they could meter the seeds accurately? at least as accurately as the GP design (each box is independent of each other). especially nwsg - fluffy dandelion type seeds. i also know from walking with a chest seeder that different seeds in a mix settle at different rates. They become not that homogenized if you will and I usually stop and shake the seeder up to redistribute.

I'm looking for real world experience with either of these 2 drills. Anyone have anything to comment on?

I'd really like to know more about the Genesis but not from someone paid to use them.

Also very curious if my JD 4720 has enough 3 pt lift capacity. The drill is 2400 lbs empty or so and the 4720 is rated at 2500 lbs. I’ve been told that if you ballast the front end with the front end loader and some fill in the bucket it will lift ok (2500+). Is this true? Very interested in everyone’s opinion.

When I first reseeded my pasture I borrowed the SCS (USDA)no till drill. It was a JD and worked very well. Now this was 12 years ago and the drill was older than that. They had a program that loaned me the drill and gave me a seed mix to buy based on my soil conditions. During the folks giving me instruction they pretty much said it was fool proof. Might be worth a look. Sometimes the Agg rental place here sells of their equipment. Might be worth a look where you are.

I've used similar ones (GP or Tye?) in the past loaned by the SWCD for establishing CRP. Don't recall the models.

I am assuming if you are investing that kind of money you will be using it every year vs a one time shot like I did. I would look for a pull type. I would be concerned with that much weight on the 3pt bouncing around. Fields are not smooth. Neither are some roads. Would not be an issue with a pull type.

If you are doing row crops you can't beat a true no till drill, but if you are using this for pasture renovation or food plots take a look at a Frontier Conservation Seeder. I have the 7' one and love it. Plants evenly (though not quite as efficiently as a true no till), you can run faster with it, and they are easier on the wallet and simpler to maintain. Plus it is a 3 point so you can get it places that a big no till will not go.

The older Frontier No-Till Drills were HayBuster Drills painted JD green. The HayBuster is a nice Drill but I think they're all pull type.

We mostly run Truax drills around here. I've pulled that size in rear wheel configuration with a little Kubota L3400 in 4WD mode with no real problems. The drill did push it around some. Our Deere 5220 has no problems whatsoever with it. Similar to your 4720.

Do you mean on the 3 point?

Did you end up buying a drill? Curious what you decided on and how you like it. I too am debating between a genesis and a LP/GP.

Yes I did. Land pride 3P606NT with all 3 seed boxes.

My 4720 could not adequately lift it. Used an Oliver 1650 and that was ok.

Put in some nice plots with it for sure.

Great thanks. Happy with it? No issues? They sure are a big investment but seem like they would be worth it.
