The whole sign thing is just wrong. Different governments of different areas require different wordings, spacings, etc but it is all so incredibly unneeded. There should be no requirement to install and maintain any trespassing signs. Are there requirements to post no dumping signs or else trash and junk dumping is legal? No, of course not. Why should trespassing be so special and require the owner to maintain a bunch of signs. How about posting no molesting signs where kids play or else molesting the children is OK. No murder zones or else killing is OK... ...and on and on and on. There are situations that might be better handled with a sign like Deliveries in the rear, or Open 8AM until 5PM, or one lane ahead, Speed Limit in school zone when lights are flashing is 25mph.
The trespassing test is simple: is this my property? Yes, then do whatever (within legal bounds). No, then get written permission from the owner before doing xyz.
Signs could be used to permit certain actions such as swimming at one's own risk, hiking in grizzly territory (owner assumes no responsibility for your safety from bears.) Without signs giving express permission or having a signed permission statement in your pocket then all activities are prohibited as trespassing.
Still, fun signs like Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again or a sign proclaiming
Radiation warning, Severe Bio-hazard, unannounced periods of radiation known to cause cancer, do not enter. This radiation sign caused some local wanna be environmentalist/do gooder to contact the local county mounties who met with the land owner to ascertain what was going on. The land owner told the deputies the sign referred to sunshine. A chuckle was had by all and the deputy told the complainer that indeed there was radiation risk on that property as described by the sign so he better stay clear.
I am in an unincorporated rural area in Oklahoma and I am not liable for you or your kids, dogs, etc. getting hurt while trespassing. If you wander out into the middle of my personal rifle range you are on your own. Due diligence is a good condition 3 wire barbed wire fence or better to fence in livestock. If somehow a head of beef gets out onto the highway and you hit it destroying your ride and busting you up, that is a sad thing but I'm not liable as I complied with "due diligence." Animals just do things and a good 6 wire fence won't stop one. ...and by the way that particular steer was my prize show steer worth many thousands of dollars but I'm willing to entertain a cash payment to avoid taking you to court and exposing you to huge legal costs.
I have 12 ponds on my 160 acre cattle ranch. Many have fish. Some local climbed a locked gate accompanied by his wife and kids and proceeded to fish and play. A fire for a weenie roast, of course, gotta have s'mores! I was not home so my wife investigated and was told they were grandfathered in because the previous owner let them fish. She told them leaving before I got back was a prudent move. They left behind used disposable diapers.
If I came uninvited into your house and took food out of your frige, or came onto your property and shot your dog for food or fun how is that different from trespassing on my property and fishing? Oh, its OK we are just doing catch and release. While not ordinarily a proponent of extreme eugenics I could make an exception for trespassers demonstrably below an IQ of say 85.
