No Trespassing...

You have GOT to know your law. If you'd been in VA, you could have spent $100's of dollars on signs, and all your time, and at the end of the day it all would have been for naught. in Virginia. Our law states the signs must be between 3' and 6' above ground.... outside this height range and they don't exist (legally speaking).

Used to be in Virginia that you could use a paint blaze on trees of a specific color, silver perhaps, in place of No Tresspassing signs. I did this as my signs kept disappearing.

Landowners may post their property by any of the following methods:
Using a paint mark of aluminum color paint consisting of a vertical line at least 2 inches in width and at least 8 inches in length, no less than 3 feet and not more than 6 feet from the ground or normal water surface and visible when approaching the property.

This thread is making it plainly obvious that there are different laws for each state, city, county; and even if you abide by those posting laws there are those that will ignore, vandalize, and act as if they have an inalienable right to hunt or use your property as they please. We'd probably all be better off posting "Toxic Waste Dump - Proceed at Your Own Risk" signs. You could even throw a few animal carcasses about; don't forget to dye them green or blue first. :p

What a no trespassing sign means depends where you live. In general, you can't leave hazards on your property ie if you dig a big pit in a trail, or put down a spike board etc.

If there are hazards that you are aware of, you're supposed to take reasonable precautions to eliminate or sign them in some way. Ie if you did a test pit in an open field, put flagging tape around it. But if say there are rotten trees in the woods, it doesn't mean you have to flag them because that is a normal condition of being in the woods.

Are u kidding me? Flagging hazards on your own property in case a tress-passer should happen by and get hurt. This country is so screwed up it isn't funny.:(

again.. it's state by state even on attractive nuisance.

many states have equine limited liability laws.. florida is one of them. horses are 'inherently' dangerous .. if you willingly go messin with them and get hurt.. it's on you.. :)

besides.. that should be a common sense thing / vs / natural selection... :)

Thought about a new sign after seeing the news last night...

Seems the school kids were not allowed on the playground yesterday because of a Mountain Lion sighting...

Seems the right thing for me and neighboring property owners to do is post Mountain Lion Warning signs... might cut down on the traffic and trash?

That's a good idea! I could use "coyote" signs here, since we do have them; although "mountain lion" sounds scarier than "coyote" to me.

Although, now that I think about it, I wonder if it might actually attract some bozos wanting to see mountain lions or coyotes? ... or actually experience the "thrill" of being near one.

.......First, do they hold any legal weight? ............

Let's say somebody comes onto my land without my permission and they get injured. Does having no trespassing signs clearly posted help me in any way, or am I liable for their injury no matter what? I suppose these matters are handled differently depending on your local laws.
..........Any thoughts or advice here would be appreciated.

.....I also need to devise a way to "frame" the signs and secure them to trees properly so they won't be torn down (that has also happened to me). Any ideas are welcome.

Legal part would be something to find out for your State. Varies by State. Same with the liability laws.

Hang the signs up high, and out of reach.

I find that No Trespassing signs without Permission are much more palatable to the hunter or would-be trespasser.

I don't like to see the clutter (same as the trash on the ground in my opinion) of No Trespassing signs, but they do communicate to others that you want your land for your use, not others.

I hunted years ago with a buddy who was very upset with land that was posted. However, when he bought 200 acres of farm/wood land, the first thing he did was post it all. :) So depends on what side of the coin one is on.
