I used my 33D this past weekend to move some implements into a storage building. I noticed when raising the FEL there was a fairly loud whining noise that I hadn't noticed in warmer weather. Temperature was in the upper 30's. Loader lift and bucket curl strength seemed to be way down too. I thought the problem might go away as the tractor's hydraulics warmed up, but it didn't improve any after the tractor had been running at least a half an hour. Is this normal? Any suggestions?

I have'nt tried using my loader in the cold weather yet, but you have me thinking. I remember reading in the NH manual that they recommend a special hydraulic fluid for use in low temps.

This is my first time replying to a post. I have 33D with about 26 hours on it now. I used it’s FEL last night to move snow, we received about 10” over the weekend and early Monday morning. I had the block heater plugged in for about two hours and let the tractor warm for a few minutes, then took everything nice and slow. The temperature was 28 degrees and I didn’t hear any noises or notice any lack of performance.

I have a 29D that made all sorts of nasty noises when the weather got cold. When it was in the shop for some warranty work last September, I had them change the hydro oil to New Holland's winter / multi whatever / grade oil and ....
No more nasty noises. Tractor sounds happy - I'm happy.

Actually, my biggest problem was with the loader "Float" didn't work very well until half of my snow plowing was done. Doesn't seem to be a problem any more.

Mike, the upper 30s doesn't seem that cold to me. Whining might be an indication of air in the system. It would also cause you to have less power. Did you check your fluid level? Does the oil look milky like it has air in it? ...just a couple of ideas. I'm certainly no real expert on your tractor.

Mine whines in the cold for a while too. Dont we all/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif depending on how cold it is depends on how long she whines. Hope this help,

My 33d had the same type of noise, the fluid was just a little low. Now I keep it at the top line.

actually the whinning noise is inherent in the class 2 boomers when the temprature gets around 38 degrees and below because of the port size in the values. The F200 oil that is NH winter oil usually solves the noise problem on most. If you complain really loudly about the noise the dealer can usually get the oil change covered under warranty after a few phone calls. Good Luck!

Well now, that sounds like the definitive solution as opposed to my "uneducated" guess. Thanks for backing me up, Spencer200. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hey Guys,

I spent about 5 hours today plowing 7" of snow with the FEL. It was less than 30 degrees and there was some hydraulic whining with the FEL, but it significantly decreased if I ran the tactor at low speed ~ 1500 rpms. After about a half a hour, I notice the whining went away at high speeds. The FEL felt as if it didn't have any loss of power at all. All in all, I had a lot of fun, I plowed the my driveway ~ 400ft (all sloped), and my neighbor's driveway ~ 300ft (all sloped), and our road ~ 1000ft (2 hills). I plowed many areas twice since another inch fell while I was playing. I even took the misses on a ride to the gas station, which is about a mile away. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif My tractor is almost at 50 hrs., so it is about time to change the oil, but I have question: Is this "winter oil" just for winter, or will it work fine in the summer months? If the winter hydraulic oil is truly year round, I'll go that way, if not, the standard oil didn't seem to give me much of a problem in the cold.
