Tractor
Yanmar 1500
First I want to thank everyone who has hepled me thus far. What a great group! As you can tell I am just learning about tractors and diesels. My little two cylinder Yanmar 1500 is quite noisy and concerns me slightly. If I had nothing to compare it to I don't think it would bother me but I have been driving the neighbor's newer John Deer. His tractor starts out sounding like mine but as soon as you take it out of idle it quites right down. Mine tends to stay noisy. It quiets down some but it still has that "diesel" clack. If it were a gas engine I'd be worried. Other than that it seems to run fine.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. All 2 cylinder diesels make more noise than a 3 cylinder. We call that noise Yammerhammer.

Be proud of that banging ....bang,bang,bang.....bangbangbang. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif It will literally do it FOREVER. The old JD Johnnypoppers used to be way worse.

The old heads at the Yahoo club discussed this in detail. What they told me was " if it don't bang , don't buy it." The louder it bangs the more compression it has.

If it makes about the same noise at idle as a gasoline engine with a sloppy rod then it is probably normal for the old style 2-cylinder Yanmar. I bought my 165D (2 cylinder) after a test drive it at a busy dealership on the outskirts of a large city. The motor sounded just fine down there. When I started it up at my quieter place in the country I honestly thought that it was about to throw a rod. At just the wrong low idle speed it can make a hammering sound like a blacksmith working over an anvil with a 3lb hammer inside of a tin shed. We call it "Yammerhammer". That was in 1982, and the sound of that tractor has not changed in 20 years now. Some guys have said that the noise comes from the way the cylinder liners are suspended in the block that makes them ring like a bell. If you really want to give yourself the shakes, stop by a marine or generator shop and listen to the sound of the SINGLE cylinder Yanmars! Ouch! On the other hand, most of the three cylinder models don't do it. Our 336D makes a sort of low chuckle and never hammers at all.

"Yammer Hammer"! I liked it so much that I had to let everybody know.

I agree with everything said above but have one suggestion. After I bought my 1300D I thought the guy had cheated me since it sounds just like it had a thrown rod. It keeps running just fine, however, which I why I agree. But.....at one point I had a problem with an injector leaking so I bought two new injectors. It's still pretty noisy but runs much more smoothly after installing them, and they weren't that expensive. Just another thought on the subject.
