Non-Lethal pistols to use against "stray" dogs

/ Non-Lethal pistols to use against "stray" dogs #11
Recently a stray pit bull caught my dog in the yard and was shaking her by the neck when I responded to the cries for help. I fired a couple of 9mm warning shots into its chest and called Animal Services to take it for rabies examination. It came back negative. My dog suffered severe injuries to the neck and a puncture would to the chest and the loss of four teeth from trying to mount a defense.

What if it had been my 18 month old grand-daughter playing in the yard? What if I had scared it off to someone else's yard? If a dog is skittish and acts scared of people I'll yell him away. If he stands his ground, he is mine. I wear the 9mm on the hip on my property for this reason and because sometimes carloads of strange people come onto the remote property with implausible stories and acting lost.

Warning shots into its chest?

I'm not saying that I ever shot a dog and caution everybody on here to remember that any form of injury that you admit causing to a pet of some kind can be used towards charges of animal cruelty. If somebody finds a wounded animal, the odds increase dramatically that they will look for the person who caused that injury. A BB gun is one of those things that have made the news here over and over again in animal abuse cases that have led to jail time. I would NEVER use a BB gun on an animal. I would never would or hurt an animal. If I was ever in the situation that I felt endangered or threatened by an animal, I would do everything in my power to eliminate that threat. I would never talk about it, and there wouldn't be any evidence of it every happening.

I spray them with 00 buck in self defense. Highly effective and so far not one has come back

If'n I was afraid of a dog for whatever reason, I'd go for the "warning shot to the chest". Forget that spray stuff. I guess, if you're trying to run one off, something else might be in order....and that's what the OP wanted to know. But the legal freaks are the real problem, maybe the spray would work on them.:confused3:

I don't buy into the lying about my actions, though I guess I can understand due to recent legal reasons the need to not speak about it. If I kill something, it is because it had to be done and I will support my actions, not cover them up.

I had a friend's dog shot b/c it was getting into the neighbor's chickens. Rather than admitting to shooting the dog, the body was dumped in a local state park. If you are justified you should have no reason to cover up or lie. Of course, your "mileage" may vary in life...

I have never shot a dog but have ran several off. The slingshot works great if you can shoot one.

Usually the dogs will return at some point. Someone mentioned fire crackers, they work good. However I had some bottle rockets, the small type, and had a problem with a dog. I taped the end of a cardboard tube up,then lite the bottle rocket (while it is in the top of the tube) and slide it down the tube. You can aim it like a rifle.

Nothing scares a dog more than a flaming, screaming rocket coming towards them and then boom! I was never bothered by that dog again.:D If you are good to can get two off before he gets too far. I have used this several times with success.

When we were kids we would take Christmas wrapping paper tubes and play army by taping the ends up and shooting bottle rockets at each other. That's where the idea came form. Luckily our parents never found out :D
