I was driving past a neighbor's at the farm a few weeks ago. He had some interesting "iron" attached to tractor in the pasture. I couldn't resist it, I had to go see. It was a 6' bush hog built out of a truck rear axle and differential. There were actually 2, one directly behind the tractor and one offset to the right and overlapping the first. When I talked to him he said he had five of them and that he bought them years and years ago from some old rancher down in South Texas who built them from rear axles left over from WW11. The differentials had forward, reverse and neutral positions and the speed of the blade was controlled by the towing speed. He said he had five of them and could cut a 30' swathe if necessary but only in long, straight pastures as turning all that lot around was a real pain.
I watched him run them and they worked great. Ofcourse there were no deck or guards on them, just the wheels, axles and blades. It looked kinda scary but when he stopped the tractor the wheels stopped and the blades stopped.
It made you wonder about the ingenuity of some of those old farmers.
