"( Time your trip after the thick of the mosquito season. I seem to recall after June. Maybe Archdean can help here."

Interestingly enough they don't bother me and chances are they won't bother you either.... but swat just one and your a victim for the remainder of the day!!

Avoid bright colors and deoderants, perfumed soap, aftershave and the like!

The trick is to convince everyone else in your family that these things will repel mosquitoes.

I don't see an evil grin face in the list.

Mosquito's, what about the other belled whitesocks as I recall. Up close they look like a giant jaw with little legs, the welts they leave on your forehead and elsewhere are not pleasant.

I rode my Harley-Davidson motorcycle from Erie, PA up to
Alaska in July 1977. We took about six weeks to enjoy the trip. We crossed into Canada at Sault Ste. Marie and took the TransCanadian Highway to Winapeg Manitoba then took the Yellowhead Highway to Edmonton, Alberta. The Alcan Highway was all dirt except around some of the towns. We never had any flat tires. I broke a few spokes and had to have the wheel respoked in Fairbanks. We had intentions of taking the ferry back but there was a strike so we rode back. It is a beautiful trip. I highly recomend you go. I didn't have any problem with the flies or mosquitos. We camped out all the way up and back.

Sandflies Rat.

The bitting insect's of Alaska may all depend on which area of the state you are in. Alaska has many different climate zones.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas, feedback and encouragement!

It will be interesting to see if we end up taking the trip. I’m up for it, but want to do it in a “whatever time it takes” mode, while the wife seems to prefer to know how long it’s going to take. Probably not smart of me to say it might take a couple months. Somehow she thinks a couple months is a long time to be on the road. A smarter guy would probably say two or three weeks and then let things stretch out as they may.

I guess if we do go the target will be to leave here in early June. One thing that I want to experience is the really long days our northern friends enjoy in the summer.

On the other hand, I sure hate the thought of losing two months of great weather and seat time at home though.

If I wanted to do it alone, my guess is that the better half would say "see you when you get back..." /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif but I really don't want to go it alone... Maybe if it turns out that she is on the edge with her decision, I will try the "Well, I guess I'll see you when I get back..." bluff. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Who knows, it might work. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

I have many different feelings on your post.

1) I'm don't feel I'm wise enough to offer a valid opinion to this question. But if I had the time and opportunity which it sounds you do, I go.

2) I don't know if I'd do it alone. I have no care in the world to go to NYC even though it's there, it does nothing for me. I guess in this way I can see how your wife wouldn't want to go to Alaska if she doesn't care to.

If I was going. I'd do what you plan to. Go to Canada and return through the US.
