Last time I saw any need to sharpen a saw blade, was when I was a little kid. My Dad was using my Grandfathers saw. It was one of the Wright's. those saws actually had a blade. Was really a reciprocating saw with a gas motor. Like a Sawzall on steroids :D

I never let my chains get that dull to need a stone on them. I keep them sharp. And if they start to dull at all while cutting, I'll swap to another chain. At the end of the day, any chains used get touched up. And, the bar gets checked and touched up/flipped, and sprocket checked.

I used to let them get dull. then wound up forcing the saw. That in turn, heated the chains, which affected the temper of the sutting edges. After that, the chains would dull really fast.

I think that is key, whether you use a file, file with clamp on guide, or an electric sharpener.

My woodcutting has gone much better... :D

Still plan to hand sharpen but I'll be a monkey's uncle before I start paying 8 bucks plus a pop to have someone sharpen my blade.

Our neighbors are all starting to barter and trade with the great depression II under way. I've still got a job so if I can buy a tool and help sharpen a neighbors blade (or chain:D), dig a post hole with the new tractor, grapple some brush in exchange for horse apples for the garden...that's what we're doing in a town that is flat on its back side and getting worse.

MAXX GB750 Chain Grinder 700220

If you are file challenged like me I bought the best just shy of a good Silvey sharpener. I hit dirt and nails in the tree's all of the time. Get a few teeth buggered up and doing it correctly with a file will take a long time. So I carry extra chains with me for all 9 of my saws. I put a tag on the sharp chains with how many links they are so I can find the right one right away for which ever bar I am using.. When I need to sharpen I go in the shop crank up some good Country music and get to work. I can sharpen a whole bunch if chains in an hour.

I knew this post would ruffle a few feathers. But I am mearly asking the question as to why people call them blades?

"Uneducated hick" .....and "not experienced" are two totally different things. If I was trying to insult you, I would have called you an uneducated hick. But I wasnt, I was trying to come up with the most polite way to ask my question and my point across.

Circular saws, hacksaws, mowers, etc. all have blades. If you were going to buy them online, you would search for blades.

When you but a replacement bar and or chain for your chainsaw, do you search for "chainsaw blades"?????

If you go into a saw shop, do you hear the pros call them blades???

If not, then I am wondering where you picked up the term blade and started using it??

Who knows, maybe I am the uneducated one and maybe they are called blades in other states or countries, that is why I am asking.

But around here, no one calls them blades except the people who ARE uneducated and don't know a thing about saws like pawn shops, etc.

I was told many years ago that a chain saw blade was a section of saw chain connected in a loop designed to fit a chain saw bar. Maybe it is a regional thing. Usually though I just call a chain.

My brother gave me one of the HF sharpeners for my birthday a few years ago and it works fine for me. I keep several chains for each saw and tend to sharpen a bunch at once when my stock of sharp chains runs low. Take a little care and pay attention and it'll do a fine job. I do keep a file in with the other bar tools, but probably haven't used it in three years.

Kinda a pet peeve of mine but it absolutly drives me nuts when people refer to them as blades.

Maybe someone can enlighten me, or maybe its a regional thing, but there are no blades on a chainsaw.

There is a bar, and a chain. The chain has cutters or teeth. But the term blade??????????? Where did that come from.

I dont mean to offend anyone, this post is not ill intended. But when I hear "blade" it just tells me that someone is not experienced with saws. Like all the posts on ebay and c-list refering to them as blades. And when I call pawnshops and ask them if they have andy pro grade saws. They say "yea we got one with an 18" blade". I ask what make/model. They say "Poulan pro" or something like that.

Again, no offence to anyone, maybe someone can educate me me on this but saws have chains, KNIVES have the blades.

Am I wrong for this driving me nuts??? or does it annoy anyone other than just me?????

I'm too busy with all of life's little challenges to worry about blade vs. chain vs. teeth. The task list is too long and time is too short. Whatever word I think of first is the one I will use. I'm not offend and no offense intended.

I have the Oregon bench sharpener and I am extremely happy. You might pay a little bit more but you will have a very precision sharpener. You will need to take your time with learning how to use the system. First understand the basicis of how to sharpen a chain with every angle being critical to the cutting performance. When you hand file a chisel chain there is a reason that you use a 10 degree up stroke and a 30 degree top plate angle on very cutter. You also make sure the top plate length is the same or your chain will cut crooked.
Be careful when you get your grinder not to burn the cutter and thereby change the rockwell hardness. Go slow and do not take too much off or heat the cutter up too much and you will have a long performing chain if you keep it out of the dirt.
