Northern Tool or Harbor Freight

Every thing I've bought from HF was in an emergency and all of it was junk. Recent examples, pry bar that snapped while prying rocks because it was cast, trailer tongue jack that broke dam near breaking my foot and a claw hammer. Temp laborers showed without hammers so I bought a couple ay HF. By noon heads were mushroomed and chips flying off after driving 16D nails. Haven't bought hand tools from NT but have bought pressure washers, welders, welding accessories/consumiables and hydraulic cylinders. Never a complaint about any of them.

Harbor Freight has plenty of good tools if you know what to get and what you will be using them for. Some of their tools have life time warranty also. Hydraulic jacks work great, the welders are great for hobbyists, nothing wrong with the sockets and wrenches. Tie downs are good, predator generators are awesome, I have a honda 2000 and a predator 2000 and both are great. Miter saws are good. It just depends on what you are going to do with some of them. Someone that does wrenching at home doesn't need the big money tools like someone working at a Nuclear Plant.

The corded tools I have to rely on and need for heavier workloads I buy from HD. Lesser used specialty corded tools I give HF a try. Like a 14g pistol grip Metalshear to rip long sheets of roofing tin. I could use a crapsman 7 inch circ saw, and deal with shrapnel, or buy the shear. (I keep a light flimsy sole plate Crapsman circ saw solely for cutting through shingle roofing, not running my Milwaukee through that..... ) It worked, and I expect it will again. The time and safe operation the first use was worth the expense, but not worth twice or more from HD for a "brand name".

Northern is close enough I can get to it if they have what I need, and no one local does, but I am finding locals can use the money (trailer Parts, gas power tools.)

Tractor Supply is close and getting closer with a new store about to open a few miles away and on my commute, so I have been shopping there a bit for the same things I might get from Northern.

I will say this- HF consumables such as Sawzall blades and cutting wheels for 4.5 inch grinders? Not buying them from HF any more they just don't have the grit, I have to buy them from HD and buy brand name.

I go to where I stand a better chance of getting something manufactured in the US. I get more angry as time goes on most of our production has been off shored. Fortunately I’ve already acquired most of what I really want/need. I am in the market to buy a new air compressor for my new shop since I sold mine to the buyer of our old house. I’ll likely buy a Quincy from NT since they have a sale price with free shipping on the one I’ll probably buy. I think for the most part Quincy parts are still made here. I’d bet the store brand stuff from most of the mentioned retailers all come from the same factory.

Rolair compressors are built in Wisconsin since 1959.

>>> The year was 1959. Our goal was simple: Produce the finest compressors known to mankind. Decades later, the goal remains the same. As a third-generation manufacturer located in the heart of Wisconsin, we've built quite a reputation for providing professional contractors with compressors of the utmost quality and craftsmanship. They appreciate our attention to detail, rugged performance and wide variety of options. But above all, they appreciate that our sole focus is compressors - nothing else.

So if you're looking for a "specialize-in-nothing" company concerned with nail guns, power tools and sales gimmicks, go to a box house, my friend. If, on the other hand, you're looking to partner with a company built on decades of industry knowledge, experience and unparalleled customer service, welcome to Rolair.<<<
