Nortrac 254 Trying To Run Hot??

Well, the 6 foot king kutter is a bit much for my little tractor chopping saplings. I recently got a 5 foot bush hog for free. I think the 6 foot one is going to sit till i get more HP. It can handle it fine in grass but when i go to chopping brush it's way to much for it. It handles the square baler much easier than the brush cutter. It will run it all day in hot weather but I have to stop every couple hrs and clean the radiator or it will run a little warm.

Having to stop to clear chaff is perfectly acceptable..

Your machine IS probably too small for that 6' mower.. but if it spins it without bogging.. I'd expect it to run it.. if it bogs down when cutting.. it's too much.

Yup. Good example of the 5hp rule. Northern (optimistically) rates the the current NT254 at 23.75 PTO hp. The tractor itself is comparatively heavy at probably 3000# with fluids and operator. My 254s turned a 5' RC adequately on level pasture, but I had to drop into low range to mow uphill.

Not to change the subject but I actually had my 2003 254 weighed at the local quarry. I first weighed the truck, then the next day I weighed the truck and the trailer with all the tie down chains ect, and then a week later the whole rig with the tractor and a 5' Ford Bush Hog on the tractor. It weighed 4,806#. I only weigh 163# and that was before I had my tires filled so its a heavy little bugger. I am guessing the bush hog weighs 500-550# and my tractor has a FEL, rear wheel weights, and the low mount front battery box with 4 suitcase weights hanging off it.

I am guessing it now weighs 5,200# with me on it and a implement on the 3 point.
