While plowing snow, I went to shift from low to middle range on my B8200, heard a grinding noise as I let out the clutch. Now I cant engage any gear in any range and have no rear PTO. Any suggestions.

Louis,
I would start by checking to see if the shifting rod has come lose or broken,if broken you will have to dig deeper.

Louis,
By the sounds of it, it may be that the clutch is gone. Is it hydro or gear? I know that the shaft to run the PTO runs straight thru the hydro trans. and spins independent of the trans. So If you have no trans. and PTO I would have to say the clutch, or something related to tranfering power from motor to trans. Let us know what you find out. I have a B8200HST as well, so I would like to hear what the outcome is.

I don't know the tractor, so I'm not much help, and what I've got to say isn't good news anyway. First, you really can't do much without a repair manual. Second, is that a lot of transmission work requires major tear downs, and most garage mechanics aren't equipped well enough to do the work.

Not much on my Ford transmission is accessible without a major tear down. I don't have enough equipment nor do I have a shop, so a 4wd problem went to the dealer this fall. It didn't bankrupt me, and the mechanics found several other things that needed attention as well. My wife found me much more easy to be around than if I tried the repair myself.

If what you describe happened to me, I'd be tempted to remove the plate where my range selector lever is attached to see what I could see, but I already know not much work can be done through the top of the transmission. I also would not disassemble anything unless I was following a disassemble procedure in my repair manual. Be aware that most cover plates have gaskets under them. You can't remove a cover without replacing the gasket.

I read Von's comment just after posting mine. I think he's right about the PTO and clutch. On my Ford gear TX, the PTO drive is taken off the flywheel by a second clutch plate. If the TX and PTO aren’t working, the clutch assembly is about the only explanation. Too bad the rest of my comment may be true. Replacing clutch parts on my Ford requires splitting the tractor--a major tear down.

However, there may be a ray of hope. The description of a grinding immediately before failure is unsettling, but it would be a little unusual for a clutch plate assembly to fail completely in the conditions described. A more likely explanation is that the linkage seized which is preventing the clutch from engaging. Some tractors have enough access to the pressure plate assembly to check if the throwout bearing slides freely on the pilot shaft, and maybe even free it. Some of the external clutch linkage also could prevent the clutch from engaging.

My B8200 has been reluctant to shift between ranges before. It's still only 600 hours on the machine, so I think it may just be a tight tranny. I have seen tranny's that were reluctant to shift; sometimes a gear set is simply under some pressure and won't slip away from the gear it's engaging.

Some older 4x4 trucks required that you backed up about 20' before you could get the transfer case to shift; the gears were simply meshed tightly together.

I would try:
1) rock the tractor back and forth a little, while it's in gear. This may take the pressure off the bound up gears.
2) Things get really bound up sometimes in 4wd. Try shifting to 2wd
3) Working between a forward gear and reverse, ease the clutch slightly in and out to while attempting to move the range lever If it's HST, try rocking the hst pedal just a little.
4) don't force it.

Try that and see how it goes.
