Daedong: OK then allow me to change the topic again.

What do you know about Walter Burley Griffin? I understand he is pretty famous in some areas of your country.

Beware Bob, many if not a majority of Austrailians do not like Canberra, they think the city is ugly and they do not like the fact that a yank designed their capitol city.

If you saw the ohter towns you might wonder where they leared to design, but we know that too, the english. Narrow streets, rosegardens etc in one of the largest desserts in the world !

Was W.B.G. the guy behind he master plan of Melboure as well?

He is only a footnote here in the states and hard to find much information about.

Bob,
Walter Burley Griffin, a landscape architect from Chicago designed our capital city, Canberra. lake burley griffin is in the middle of Canberra.
We have a number of different nationalities that contributed to our great country over our short history and one that should not be over looked is Joern Utzon a Danish architect who designed the Sydney opera house

I asked because he designed my house. I really don't know much about him/his work. He is often referred to as one of the students of F.L.Wright, but not much more is attributed to him or his work. My house is the only one I've ever seen with an elevated sleeping porch, which I understand was fairly common in some areas of Australia. I really would like to find more information on him.

As far as him being from Chicago, I believe that is untrue. He studied in Chicago. I was led to believe he was from the East Coast. But I am not sure. I did find out his wife did much of his illustrating and the two collaborated on many projects, although my house plans are from his student years (1912) but not built until we constructed it in 1994. It was originally designed to sit on a ridge in Mason City, Iowa for a bank owner. We set it on our ridge instead!

I would not think so as Melbourne was well before his time.

Vin, I get my rubs where I can. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I worked with Australian design firms this came up many times, many as jokes, many not. You have to admit it is the only town in Oz like it.

I find it to be a nice place, but many find it to be annoying with the wide roads, circle drives etc.

My understanding is that it is laid out to look like a flower.
