I bet the plastic hood cost every bit as much as a steel one. I'm guessing they went that way thinking its a better part: no rust, more resilient to abrasion, etc. but would prefer metal myself. I'm also not a 1-series fan. Just seems like a super up gt to me and there are better options in the subcut class.

Looked it up; replacement rubbermaid trash can lid hood for 1025r = $193.oo
replacement STEEL hood for 2210; $826.oo !!!!!!!! (insert heart attack here)

That's retail, I assume. Doesn't really reflect what JD's costs are, especially since parts for legacy models start to get real expensive as they get older. The comparison to Rubbermaid trashcan lids is unfair. There can be huge differences in plastics, depending on composition. The 425 I sold had a plastic hood and it was pristine, even after 19 years, and didn't baby it either. Besides, it's just a cover anyway. I don't know why folks get so worked up over whether a cover is steel or plastic. We aren't talking fenders here, or other parts that have to have structural integrity. And I'm still not a fan of the 1-series. Overall, just seems cheap in many ways, but the hood seems "adequate". I have a similar one on my X739. Not crazy about the one piece design, but I have no issues with plastic use in the hood. Time will tell if it lasts or not. And if I can replace it every 15 years or so with a new one for under $200, that seems reasonable enough to me.

U.S. EPA required all <49 hp diesel engines built starting Jan. 1 2013 be Nonroad Tier 4 emissions certified. For these little engines, that usually meant some combination of EGR & DEF. I looked at the new model 1025 and found they also retarded the injection timing to reduce power below 25 gross hp to extend the NOx limit fo a year. Hence the lower tractor model number. It is 24.8 hp, I believe.

My 2012 model 1026R is 25.4 hp. With no EGR or DEF.

I didnt see any EGR or DEF on the 1025r I looked at, it was a 2014. Heck my CS2410 does not have Tier 4 either.

I'd love to have a straight answer on this one. I've personally seen a brand new 1025R and it had no EGR on it (small engines like this wouldnt use DEF). We even have some mini excavators here at work that are 2013 CASE and they are Tier 3.

The 425 and 739 plastic hoods are way different than the 1 series hoods. I hate to say it but the rubbermaid trash can lid and the comment about one of those cheap plastic battery operated cars that kids use is spot on. I looked at two of them and the material was very, very, thin and would not even line up correct with the lower section. It gave me the impression it would warp easy especially when in sun. Most people don't know it but the 8030 series big Deere's had an issue with the plastic hood. If you stand in front of one on the left side they bow in a few feet before you get to the cab. I had a buddy that had one replaced that had a built in brace in that location and have seen many others that way. I guess most of us are use to old solid tractors that where built like a tank. Heck we have a 73 model MF in the barn and other than one small ding the hood is like new. it had the ding when we bought it. Rust on a tractor hood for the most part is not an issue if a guy takes half way good care of the machine. We have had tractors much older than 73 also with no rust or ding issues. They also should not get dented up unless you drop something on the hood from a bucket loader.

I have never looked close at the hood of a 2210. I assume its just mainly the top and the sides are separate like the 1025R? The hood if I remember correctly on the 1025R does not have very much of a side before you get to the bottom panels. I don't see how it would cost Deere much more for the 1025R hood to be made out of metal especially since there are hardly any sides to it. Heck even MTD as cheap as there are made have some type of cheap metal hood on most models.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have a plastic hood on a lawn tractor after what happened to the steel hood on my 2210. Plastic would just bounce rather than dent. Can't help it, the 1 series hood reminds me of rubbermaid. Not opposed to it if I could afford to trade up.

My 2210 hood had one small dent in the right side when I bought it. I've added a pretty good sized wrinkle in the left front corner and yesterday put a crease dent in the top when I tried to mow under a low hanging oak tree branch.

I agree, I'd rather have plastic if it's good plastic. But I'd be very disappointed if I paid the money for a new 1 series and had to deal with a hood that made me question it's quality as I stared over it mowing.....

I think Deere was so concerned about features like the autoconnect deck and quick park loader that they forgot to basic stuff a tractor should have.

The 1r series has allot of great features built in and in my opinion if they had just put a little more in the tractor such as a metal hood they would have a tractor tough to beat. I would not have an issue with a plastic hood if it could stand the test of time and not crack and break. Abuse is one thing but falling apart because of the outside elements is another. I would rather see cars and trucks personally with all metal frames and plastic body panels that are tough and don't show rust as long as they could make them safe.
