Tom, Are the legs cooked until their near charcoal? How long in a kiln? Does the moisture content go negative when they get that dark?

Looks even more impressive now, I hadn't notice the legs before.

Very nice sofa table. I love that look.

I am re-wiring most of my old woodworking equipment now with hopes to start producing soon.

Norm called them dutchman's but in highschool they were butterflys, but you did a great job for sure! Did you use glue or a slow epoxy with sawdust to stick them inplace?

The template, bushing and 1/8" bit make for a perfect fit. Just a little cleanup in corners with chisel. Ordinary glue

I am not sure how long they are in kiln. Supplier did not say. Biggest problem is so little moisture in wood that i had problems initially gluing the pieces as it sucked moisture from glue

Pecan (hickory) and the legs are thermal ash. Think baseball bat kiln dried till it changes color, gets even harder as it has every bit of resin and moisture cooked out. The dark chocolate color is all the way through.

I think they call that "carbonized" , right? I saw carbonized poplar available for siding when we were building our home, and it had a very cool look -- would really be perfect in a more modern home design. It's called "Cambia" as a trade name.

What kind of finish did you use on the top? I like to do woodworking and have a decent shop set up for it, but I have a lot to learn when it comes to finishing. Thanks and nice work.

I had not heard the term carbonized but it fits. At this mill, it was in a room with several other kinds of carbonized woods but not with a brand name. I was told that these are now being used for decking as once cooked, it is insect and rot resistant and often carries 30 year warranties.

The finish is 2 coats of Danish oil followed by 400 grit wet sanding with more danish oil followed by 3 of satin Arm-R-Seal.

Very nice. I've been thinking of doing something similar, but haven't figured out how to get it perfectly flat after rough cutting it. I can get a sawmill out here to do the basic cut, but then sanding it smooth without creating valleys is where I get lost. Did you use a drum sander or something like that?
