I went out into the field and found my Gracie (horse) with all four legs in the air. I can say that it would have been much harder to have done the job of buring her without my tractor. The ground is very cold and it's nice to have hundreds of hours so the motions of digging a hole are not hard to do.

In Colorad the body must be 2 ft down.

I am very sorry for your loss. I dred this day so much. I have 2 horse now, with 3 on the way. I have never had to deal with this, but not sure how I will handle it when it comes. At least she went outside, I just can't even think about trying to get a horse out of a stall.

Don't cry for the horses
That life has set free
A million white horses
forever to be

Don't cry for the horses
Now in God's hands
As they dance and they prance
To a heavenly band.

They were ours as a gift
But never to keep
As they close their eyes
Forever to sleep

Their spirits unbound
On silver wings they fly
A million white horses
Against the blue sky Look up into heaven
You'll see them above
The horses we lost
The horses we loved

Manes and tails flowing
They gallop through time
They were never yours
They were never mine

Don't cry for the horses
They will be back someday
When our time has come
They will show us the way

Do you hear that soft nicker
Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses
Love the ones that are here.

Unfortunately we've had to bury too many. One that on first trail ride got frightened by a train and ran off a cliff, 3 from old age, one (a neighbors from unintentional neglect {please no comments on this one}) and one from an accidental impailment (t-post, another neighbor) and one from being gored by a bull (same neighbor and bull is no longer a problem). All this over a 5 year period. If you have horses it's not "if" they'll get injured but "when". But the joys of horse owership and riding outweigh the bad things.

Yep horse owners love them ... grandpa always said if you don't want horse problems don't have a horse, then he always said that about everything ... if you don't want tractor problems don't own one ... on and on and on!!

I hate to bury one, but I hate it worse when you have to put one down. I'm old fashion and don't like the needle, so I do it myself.

The hard part was that she needed to be strapped down so I could pull her to the whole. Next time I think I'm going to make a whole at that spot.

When putting her in I used the FEL and lifted the front hoofs and shoulders over and in. When she went in her back legs hit the other side and did not lay flat. I tried to see if I could bend them. But it was to hard to try. My father in law came to "help". Looked at the legs and said " why is moving the back legs hard for you, you already broke the front with the loader!" I'm telling you if I was not down in a hole and had a tractor between me and him......

But like a dog the best way to get over this is to get a new one. My wife said why don't we go to a horse rescue. I'm not sure, yes it's good for the horse but I really want to stick to quarters and ones that are bomb proof. I'm not a horse man, I just love them and know how to take care of them.

Sorry to hear you lost your Gracie:(

I have not owned horses but I did loose my two best friends this year-my Great Danes. They were my constant companions and I lost them six months apart; one from heart disease and one from a heart attack while we were out grouse hunting:(

I used my tractor to dig their graves a few feet apart from each.

When I lost the second one we only waited two weeks before we went to the pound and picked up a nice six year old sheppard mix. She's a good girl and a good friend to our fourteen year huskie mix but I still miss the big dogs.

We have seen timber wolf tracks on our property now that the big dogs are not out on patrol so I think I will get another Dane or maybe an English Mastiff.
