Summer is officially here...this is why I sometimes sit on my boat at the marina and just shake my head in disbelief.
Pittsburgh's River Rescue squad and the U.S. Coast Guard are searching for a man who jumped into the Allegheny River during a boat collision early today.

The Coast Guard said a barge struck an 18-foot recreational boat near PNC Park just after midnight.

All six people jumped into the river. Three swam to shore, two were rescued by a passing boat and one man is still missing.

The Coast Guard and the state Fish and Boat Commission are investigating.

I caught part of that on the news today, I think it was channel 11. Heard the boat lost power and couldn't get out of the may of the barge.

Sounds like yet another case of no pfd's in use/accessible. I can't imagine anyone being "suddenly struck by a barge". I'm imagining the Austin Powers movie where the warehouse worker is getting hit by the steam roller. Seems to me like there would have been enough time to throw on a pfd.

Pure speculation on my part not knowing the details of the event so I probably should not have monday-morning-quarterbacked the event. Also, just because we read something in the paper or see it on the news does not mean we (or the reporters) know the details.

Too many barley pops will can make pfd's inaccessible. 6 guys in a boat; there had to be several chilly adult beverages in use there.

Sometimes to make way for the beverages, the pfd's need to be left safely at home !!!!!!!

I heard that too. But a barge doesn't travel at 45 mph turning up the Allegheny around a blind curve. And they have their 20 kazillion watt spotlight on, ya can see that big boy moving up miles away. Down near the point it's a zoo. On the weekends I avoid that place like a plague. All the idiots with more money than brains take their boats there to be cool for the honeys at the dockside bars. But, some of those "boaters" are the same as the jetskiers who don't realize the water is a wet road with rules and regs.
