Steve, you may have a Southern Hemisphere version of the Altair 3000. Check the Owners Manual, Page 3, "Terms and Conditions", (fine print) 4th paragraph.

There's a conversion kit available IOT switch it to Northern Hemisphere Protection (TM). It's only US$249.99 + S&H if I remember correctly. I'd link you to their website but it's not operational for some reason... a temporary situation I'm sure.

I've been trying not to overpost here, but have to say this. I happen to have that exact piece of scrap wire- er, highly sensitive item which I will give to somebody who needs it.

My Altair is the Northern Hemisphere version. Do you pick up the Jim Rome show on your Southern Hemisphere version? The show comes on weekdays from 17:00 to 20:00 GMT.

I am beginning to think that my Altair is not as defective as I thought at the outset. Rome uses jargon that may have been misinterpreted by an "amateur lexicographer" -- Stucknut Jim Rome Smacktionary. Alternatively ( and a view I am beginning to believe), the "amateur lexicographer" may be a Rome lackey who has provided "innocent" interpretations of Rome jargon that has an alternative meaning to those "in the know."
