Now I stepped in it....Grand L shopping

In Knoxville, it will have a hill or two or three.

I didn't know squat about CUT's in 2002 when I went shopping and my dealer talked me into a RFM which I never regretted. I have a JD lawn tractor for the smaller area around my houses and out buildings. The large front lawn that I used the RFM on was a barley field last year and is in canola this year. The M!M was much more expensive than the RFM and now would be a more expensive piece of equipment to put in the corner or try to sell where I can sell my RFM to anyone with a Cat 1 hitch no matter what brand, something the dealer had pointed out.

I'd wait. Too many variables with getting a new place. You don't know if you will end up with 10 acres of finish mowing or 30 acres of wood with hills. Buy the wrong tractor now and you will take a real hit selling something that new next year. Just my $.02.

You should be able to find the spot you like. Not sure about the 4 bedrooms?I would wait on the tractor,as some of that ground is hilly. Our area is generally flat and a lot of people are going zero turn down here and saving time and fuel?

I too would wait until the move. If for nothing else, dealer support. Sometimes somce dealers can get hanky about warrenty work on machines purchased elsewhere. I "know" they are obligate to, but they dont have to go above and beyond for you like if you purchase from them.

I'd wait till you move, re-analyze your property and needs, and then find a local dealer there.

WAIT!!
You might find a place where a widow is moving to a condo in Florida and just has to get rid of the new 4240 her deceased husband bought.

How sure is the move next year? Do you know what your moving too or are you unsure what kind of farm/acreage your going to get in TN? If your unsure it might be wise to make due with your B2620 till you KNOW what your getting in TN for sure. I would imagine the transport cost of driving from NY to TN both ways to transport a tractor would be quite a bit too. By getting a tractor before you know what kind of farm your going to get in TN your litterally putting the cart before the horse. You might end up with 4 acres or 104. Open spaces or lots of trees to mow around.......ZTR mower country here in Tenn and KY in that case. If you have new tractor fever (we've all had it, nothing wrong with it) try to just learn all about your options and what you would get for what scenerio you might buy in TN. Once you've got the farm in TN bought then you'll know exactly what kind of tractor to buy. Not the advice you wanted to hear but I think it might be your best option if your for sure going to make the move. If your not going to make the move then just get what you want for your current place. A trade up to a B3030 would be sweet.....my mom has one. The grand L series would be too big and too HEAVY for most lawns here, only a very open lawn with very few trees could be mown with any sort of enjoyment with a grand L. Even then in wet conditions I think it would tear up the turf we have around here something awful......good luck and keep us infromed......future neighbor!

This is excellent advice as there are a lot of tire-kickers who show up on TBN dreaming of a M9540 for their 6,000 sq foot suburban lot. As they say in Texas, "all hat, no cow".

Buy the tractor to fit the need, not the other way around.

When I first advised, I admit, I didn't read all of your post and the part about moving. For sure I would not buy anything until the move occurs. From a standpoint of keeping the new dealer happy to not knowing what will suit your land best, you need to wait. You may end up with 2000 or 2 acres, and I bet if you got a dinky little 3x40 now and then got 2000 acres you'd be kicking yourself that you could justify a M135 and if you got 2 you'd be kicking yourself for such a big tractor on such a small plot.

Wait???? I thought you bought the tractor and then found the land to fit it? Did we change the policy here on TBN?

I like the 4240. You get the more powerful and higher lift loader and the tractor isn't much bigger. I have ag tires and run across my lawn all the time. The only place I see marks is where I drove across the wet soggy yard to mount the loader a few weeks ago after removing the snow blower. The 4240 will give you plenty of power for a rear mower and brush hog.
