What!!?? Crappie is perhaps the tastiest fish one can ever eat.
I also think crappie is the best eating fish ever. However, when Jinman hosted the get-together at his place and Fishman did a fish survey of his lake, as Fishman was doing a fish count I think he mentioned that crappie (specifically black crappie if I remember correctly) was not a good pond fish as it could quickly overpopulate.
Fishman?????????

Robert, there are salt water perch. I don't even know how many varieties. There are also many varieties of fresh water perch; sometimes called bream, sunfish, perch, or blue gill (although the blue gill is actually one particular variety I've seen people use that name for just about any of the perch varieties). And while many of them are quite small, for my taste, there is no better eating. Of course some places the crappie is also called a white perch, and they're my first choice for fresh water fish, only because the other perch varieties are usually too small.

Lake Perch photo, also called YELLOW PERCH. Common in the midwest. High priced at better restaurants. These can overpopulate small ponds, but in the great lakes, they make a mighty good catch and subsequent dinner! They are longer and more slender than the Bluegill, or the Black or White Crappies.

Bluegill, similar in shape to the Crappies, but with different coloration, completely different body shape than Perch. Usually too small to eat, but still tasty when you get enough of them. I prefer Perch or Crappie to Bluegill.

Black Crappie, same basic body shape as the Bluegill. Similar, but larger than the White Crappie. Coloration is different than Bluegill. Dorsal fins are farther back on the body than Bluegill, Crappie are often a bit larger than Bluegill, but often people confuse the two. Crappie taste better too.

I have to go to lunch now!

Ok.. based on the pictures the ones you guys are calling bluegill are what we call bream around here. Their small.. but tremendous fighters for their size, and if you catch them at the right time of year in the right overpopulated farm pond you can catch a freezer full in one afternoon.

Crappie are usually in the lakes around here.. not so much the little farm ponds and also can be caught in tremendous quantities. Crappie also get called "papermouth bass" by the old timers here. I think maybe papermouth bass may refer to a completely different fish in other parts of the country but I'm not sure.

*Edit: I don't think I've ever seen a fish like the one in the lake perch picture around these parts. Closest thing might be one we call a white bass... smaller and more slender than a largemouth bass with of course a smaller mouth and a white or silverish color. They travel in large schools following shad in the deeper water. You can usually find them by watching the birds also follow the shad schools.

Bob, we don't have the yellow perch in my part of the country to the best of my knowledge. At least I've never seen any; guess they must prefer colder water. So when I was up in northern Minnesota several years ago and caught several of them, I had to go ask what they were. And, as you said, they made a very good dinner that night. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Robert, before you can tell what kind of fish someone is talking about, you have to know where he's from. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif When my department sent me to Northwestern University for the '71-'72 school year, the first guy I met there was from Lousiana and when we got to talking about fishing, he said his favorite was going sac-a-lait fishing in a bateau. Of course, I eventually learned that meant going crappie fishing in a jon boat. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Along the Texas coast, one of the popular salt water game fish is the speckled trout, but I understand the same fish on the east coast is known as a weakfish.
