Nut/Bolt Size/Pitch Checker

I have a little 'thread cleaner', which is set up for threads per inch. It's a little square piece of hardened, cut steel with different size cutout on all four sides, and on each end of the bar. It's not a great tool for cleaning up threads, but it is great for checking the pitch, and will take down the occasional burr or flattened area. I think it goes from 12 to 24. Nowhere near as good as a tap, I use it more to check than clean, but it's compact.

I use my 50 year old vernier calipers and a metric or SAE pitch gauge.

Thats how i do it. Only my calipers are a tad newer.

Those are thread files. And they dont work well on smaller stuff. But work very well on large diameter stuff that they dont make common dies for. Like axle stub shafts in old 4wd trucks. Clean them threads up do you dont have to fight the spanner nut the whole way. OR large pipe fittings that may get dinged up. Anything small and common thread pitch I will use a die. But for the big stuff, those files can be a lifesaver
