Nutty drivers?? (long)

Re: Nutty drivers??

I am irked by the folks who don't know what a Yield sign means. It means Yield to oncoming traffic. STOP if it's necessary. It's particularly an issue where folks are coming off a cloverleaf onto another road and they have a Yield sign. They think the folks on the road without the sigh should make way for them. And I've seen accidents where the folks without the Yield sign are trying to pull into the right lane to enter the hiway and the folks who are exiting don't Yield.

Last evening I was entering the interstate and I had a Yield sign at the bottom of the ramp. There was lots of traffic on the hiway and they were signaling to exit. I stopped to give them the right of way and an idiot behind e was honking his horn. I was ready to put it in park and walk back to see if he needed any help.

Dave, I've always said there are two things nearly everyone does, but which very few are properly trained for in advance and that is (1) driving an automobile, and (2) raising children. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It really is amazing at how much road rage there is, and how often the person who's mad at the other driver is in fact the person who is wrong.

Re: Nutty drivers??

Yield signs.....wait until you see what a typical American driver does at a roundabout. Two were recently installed in Columbia. You are supposed to yield to traffic coming from your left. As I proceed to my right, I am invariably flipped off by one or two drivers on my right who are absolutely sure the yield sign meant I was supposed to yield to them. Or, if I happen to be in the most active lane and follow another driver legally and correctly, the fellow stopped on my right will honk as if we were at a four-way stop and I failed to give him his turn.

The yield signs at interstate exits are often a pain for me. I know I am supposed to check for oncoming traffic and yield to it, but not just stop. However, there are many of these yield signs so located that only a contortionist could do a thorough check for oncoming traffic without coming to a complete stop. I like to drive in such a way as to avoid death, regardless of the legalities involved.

Re: Nutty drivers??

One of my favorite gripes -- the person who slows down to make a turn about half a block before the turn, then slows some more, then practically comes to a complete stop while making the turn. I yell out loud (I yell a lot in the car, it reduces blood pressure and road rage, and no one can hear me, anyway), "The dang fool thing WON'T FALL OVER if you go a little faster!" Or, on any occasion where the person in front is just going to blamed slow, "The gas pedal is the one under your RIGHT foot!"

The yelling never changes anything, it just makes me feel better.

Just to take a different tack for a moment, I'll tell you one I do like very much: the person who is going to make a left turn, usually into a rural driveway and with no oncoming traffic (2 lane road), who pulls over into the left lane before slowing and turning. That's real consideration -- I can keep going without slowing, while he can take as much time as he likes to make his turn. There's no danger of my mistaking his move and trying to pass him, either. I've adopted the habit -- I have to turn left off a state two lane highway to get to my rural property, the state highway is straight as a die for the next 10 miles which means I can see, so if there is nothing coming in the other direction, I move to the left before slowing and turning -- turn signals on, of course, so they know I'm not going to move back over to the right.

Re: Nutty drivers??

Tis a good thing I qualify for the "BEST" driver going. Means I never make a mistake eh.
