As for the discussion that this evolved into, it seems to me that the pro HST crowd wants to compare like machines and the pro power reverser crowd wants to compare like price machines. This split seems to be present throughout the thread. If at some point all agreed that we were only debating like for like machines please point that out.

No argument there. I don't know why anybody would bother comparing machines of different sizes....seems like an obvious result when you do that, but it's as if they're trying to prove what everybody already knows....bigger machines can do more work. It also seems that the pro-PR folks are generally talking about different core tasks, and frequently larger machines. The problem with that is it doesn't really apply to what the OP was talking about....the typical small land owner who isn't tilling large fields, etc.

Isn't it logical that if you have a bit more left over you could either go a bit faster or use an implement that was a bit larger? Either way you get more done. Please clarify what is false about this logic.

I don't think it's necessarily a logical outcome that more power will let you go faster, or use an implement that's a bit larger, in the way we're talking about here. At that end of the scale it's usually traction that becomes the critical factor, but let's ignore that reality for now. Who really runs their machine at full throttle to complete a task on a regular basis? I don't think many people do. From a practical standpoint that means the guy with an HST machine is simply using a bit more of the engine's available power than the guy with the same machine that has a PR....they're still getting the job done in the same amount of time. If somebody sizes their implements such that they have to run at 100% throttle, sure they'll get a bit more done with a geared tractor than an HST, but I really doubt that's a common occurrence.

Previously you stated that if you could get one in the size tractor you require you "Absolutely" would. Check Post #177. You said you gave up HST to go to something much larger. Sounds like you prefer the HST.

Yes, for most of what I'm doing I would prefer HST because my typical uses don't involve extensive ground engagement work. I'm mowing, moving dirt, general loader work, etc....a little bit of everything. For that, the bit of power loss wouldn't make any difference to me...I'm talking something in the 10K lbs and 100hp range. On the other hand, I know I would be a bit faster with an HST setup, so it wouldn't have a downside. If I was working large fields for hours on end, it would be a different story....not the case for me, of most folks on TBN (it is primarily a compact tractor forum after all).

Here is a Question for the HST folk's just cause I don't have one and want to know. Is there a left and right brake? I use the individual ones on my gear tractors to help in tight turns and to help reduce wheel spin when not in 4 wheel drive mode. Though it would be a good question to ask before buying.

On my Kioti NX series, there are two brake pedals. However, I leave the brake pedals linked because the NX series has a tight turn option that automatically cuts power when making a tight turn. I think my tractor turns around in 11 feet.

Eric do you know how much the turn assist options costed you and do you think it's worth it?

All the HST models I looked at had left and right independent brakes, plus dif lock on the left side.

Yes, I think all of the new HST tractors have split braking. I was ignorant of that feature up until about a year ago, even though I've actually had it for several years! Really helps, especially when tilling/discing.

Turn assist was $50.00. I think it is a relay that plugs into the harness. I've never not had it, and so I don't know. The other HST tractors I've used were all smaller than my tractor, and so i don't have a frame of reference.

Thanks for your input. I have 8 geared tractors and the only HST ones we have are what I consider "lawn mowers" So i have been having problems deciding on what to purchase. Its going to be either the 4510 or 5010
