NX4510 Parking Brake Failure - Life/Safety issue

   / NX4510 Parking Brake Failure - Life/Safety issue #11
I’m pushing 800 on my NX cab shuttle with no issues, and I have to use the brake just about anytime I get out due to the shuttle. Wonder if a right hand brake set up is different too.

I've got 490 hours on my 2014 NX4510HST without any issues whatsoever with the brake pedals failing to hold. I do have to ask. Are you holding down the brake locking lever when you step on the brake pedals. If you are, you are causing the premature wear. I step down hard on my pedals then set the lever down and release the brake pedal. To release the brake I just step hard on my brake pedals and the locking lever releases by itself. You could probably temper the dogs with a torch when you replace it.

Here are a few pictures of my brake pedal brake step and the multiple brake pawl. I use my brake every time I park my tractor because I have a downhill driveway that aims towards my garage. When I first bought this tractor I used to push down on the lever when I was setting the E Brake. I learned quickly not to do that. That is why you will see some very slight wear on the brake pedal stop lock. Someday I will pull that off and weld it up. The welding will make it super hard and pretty much wear proof.

Jim R you have the same parking brake set-up as I do. Is your NX a non-cab model also? It's interesting you have very little wear on the brake parts - from your description you are using the exact same sequence which I have always used - cram the brake pedals down hard then push the locking lever down to engage the pawl. To release just step hard on the brake pedals and the locking lever springs off - which is where I believe the wear occurs. Maybe I use the parking brake more often than you. In a typical day of using the tractor for, say, brush clearing or even mowing I might use the parking brake dozens of times - every time I get off the tractor whether I leave it running or not. Of course now that it is so worn I can't use it at all. When I do eventually replace or rebuild the parts I'll be sure and modify them so they will last.
And I'm mystified as to why I'm having so much trouble attaching photos to this site. Every time I try I get an "invalid content" message or some such on the attachment procedure window.

I use my brake pretty much every time I get off my tractor except when I shut it off on flat ground because I drop the loader. If you are slamming the pedals with your foot to release the lock, that may be what Is doing the damage. Or, you are setting the lock on the first notch then pushing the brake pedal harder to set the lock into the second notch. I have an open cab just like yours.

That kind of wear is not going to happen on the release of the brakes unless you are really slamming on that brake pedal. If you are doing that, then it is self inflicted.

I too agree no need to cram anything. I apply enough pressure to the pedal to hold the tractor, then push down on the parking lock lever to engage, to release I simple push on the pedals enough to allow the lever to spring back to release. It should not take much force to apply or release the brakes. Per haps the pedals and locking paw are sticking due to rust or corrosion and need cleaned.

I add photos using my computer and not a cell phone. When you make a post, click on "Go Advanced", Click on Manage Attachments, Click on ADD FILES in the top right of the picture box It will say add files from your computer/website. Click on BROWSE. Go to your photo source and select the photos that you want to upload. Click on UPLOAD. The new files will appear in the bottom window and you will be all set.

Yup. Done all that on my desktop Mac and always get "The following errors occurred: (long series of #s) Invalid file". And apparently we are both stepping hard on the brake to engage/disengage the parking lever but getting different wear. You're right, the damage is self inflicted by normal use. I have a feeling the frequency of use accounts for the different wear. The brake pedal/lever is free of dirt/corrosion - the tractor's been garaged it's entire life (except when working) and has barely gotten wet.

I use Macs and am not experiencing your troubles on this site. If you're using Safari, try downloading FireFox web browser and give it a try. Do not, as in never download Google's Chrome for Mac. It tracks you and breaks.
