I've got a NARDI model 220 backhoe that is missing a Nylock Nut which threads onto a shoulder bolt that holds the bucket to the dipper stick. Attached is a picture that shows the Nut I'm looking for. It is part #21...no part (thread size) identification.

I've been trying to get one for a long time and have contacted a couple of dealers but have not had any success in getting the right one. One dealer sent me a 24mm x 1.5 nut that was too big. I went to the hardware store and bought a 20mm fine thread nut but it did not start on the bolt...it was too small....but just by a tiny bit. One of the dealers I called measured a backhoe he had and told me it was a 20mm, but the nut I bought did not fit so either I bought the wrong one or he is wrong. I measured the OD of the bolt thread and it measures just under Ø7/8" so I think it might be a 22mm fine thread nut. I can't remember the exact measurement now that I'm home but will post it after next weekend if someone is not able to help me by then.
Thanks,

This is a picture of the Nardi Backhoe and you can see the nuts I'm talking about.

Have you tried McMaster-Carr at www.mcmaster.com. They have almost a half million hardware and other miscellaneous items to choose from and lots of hard to find stuff. When nobody else has it they usually do.

Assuming you can't easily take the bolt to the hardware store, buy one each of standard hex nuts in all sizes that appear to be close. Maybe even SAE. Then when you find out exactly what nut you need, maybe you can find a place to order a Nylock nut or other locking type nut. Maybe the standard nut with lockwasher or jam nut would work temporarily.

Have you tried a thread gauge, that should tell you right away what size you need? You can pick these up pretty cheap at local auto store or something like that.

Hi 3RRL,
A 20 mm bolt should measure about .787 in our language. A 22mm bolt should measure about .866 in our language. With that said, your measurement of just under 7/8" or .875 would indicate a 22mm bolt to me if indeed it is metric. If it looked like fine thread then order a fine thread 22 mm.

How about taking the bolt to a Kubota dealer. We know that nothing they sell is made in the states /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif so they likely have a good selection of metric, if that's in fact what it is. They also sell plenty of backhoes and other equipment using locknuts. McMaster-Carr is a great source, but you need to be sure what you are ordering.

If you still can't find one, try finding just a regular nut, then squish it slightly and use some loctite.

Take one of the other nuts with you to an industrial supply dealer. They should be able to match it up.

Boat guy,
The thread gauges I have are for measuring # of threads and not size, plus minr are not metric. But I thought of using them to determine what pitch it is.
Thanks,

What I found is a standard 20mm bolt is 2.5 thread pitch and the nylon lock nuts are 0.75 each. Metric nuts
