Oil rig anchor chain breaking:

oil rig anchor chain snaps near death - YouTube

I broke a chain trying to drag a large stump a dozer had left, totally uprooted. The chain recoiled about 20 feet and hit my tow vehicle quite hard.

Anything that stretches will recoil when suddenly released. The more stretch, the more recoil. I believe that chains that just fall were not stretched, but just had a weak link.

Where did you get the strap? What was it made for? It sounds pretty strong but as others have said you can ruin it pretty easily if you wrap it around logs and skid them with it. If you do use it I would put a chain around the log and fasten the end of the strap to the chain. I have a set of chains with regular chain hooks on one end a big J hooks, like wreckers use, on the other end. They are nice to use with a strap. The big J hook is easy to hook to your strap and it will not damage the strap.

I'll take a pic of my tailgate from my last snapped strap experience. It's not the worst that i have ever seen but its still significant. I am speaking from personal experience with both straps and chains when being used to retrieve very stuck vehicles.

The question was asked where I got this from. I got it at our City auction. It was used by the street department or the utilities/water department. On the box for the sale it said tow strap./rope. It is quite heavy, I first thought it might have been used by the fire department as I felt it looked heavy enough to pull out their trucks but they said it did not come from their department.
I am quite sure my 4 wheel tractor would not have enough power to break the same. The ideas listed will help, I have 7/16 inch chain and some 1/2 inch and I have some 1/2 inch steel cable but it is pretty heavy and relatively stiff to work with. Thanks

Hi Bruce,

That was the scariest episode of chain breaking I have seen. That big a** chain was certainly air borne, and headed for that rigger's head. He must have a guardian angel.

Thanks,
Thomas

The concern about abrasion is very real. I was lifting a log with a fairly think strap once and was using the roll of the bucket to get a little more lift. I knew the edge of the bucket would contact the strap but I thought it would be okay if I did it slowly. Wrong. It sliced like I was cutting it with a shears. That strap has a knot tied in it to remind me how fragile they are if abraded and I use it for light lifting only now. For clean unabraded pulling they are fine.

Bumper to bumper and take a run with straps. Sometimes use two to extend the length. They stretch nicely and ease the jerk! Course they do break with related damage to surrounding items! Seen a flew incidents like this. Of course I didn't do that or should say "Have a strap break".:D

Oilfield work with lots of company p/u's having to drive in mud and snow.

Well that's a lot "heftier" strap than I envisioned in my first reply. I think you'll be ok (x4)! Just protect it from dragging in the dirt, and on the tractor end, from any possible cutting action.
