Now Ohio is the opposite, RVs plates are relatively inexpensive. Put a porta potty, sink and air mattress in a gooseneck horse trailer and the license plates drop 70 or 80%.

I can see the state charging high fees for contractors using gooseneck trailers every day, but I think mine has been only used once or twice this year. Too bad they don't have farm or non-commercial use rates but then too many people would cheat.

In Indiana you can get farm tags on a trailer. Not sure if its much cheaper but it keeps you away from CDL in most cases.

Can't see registering it in Maine, not sure how I could do that, would I need an address or residence?? And it can be done on line?? Sound dicey pulling a big ole trailer down the road with non matching plates between the tow vehicle and trailer. .

There are companies that due just this and its 100% legal. Just do some searching.

With larger trailers, they can't see your truck plate anyway so they won't even see the difference issue states. Drive carefully and avoid getting pulled over and it will minimize your issues. I'm looking into the Maine thing, haven't decided yet, but I've got one gooseneck horse trailer that they want exorbitant fees for and it only gets off the farm once a year or so. Getting Maine plates would be simpler and probably safer than switching plates between trailers.

In Vermont it's $23 if it's under 1500 lbs and $46 if it's over per year. They just dropped inspections for trailers under 1500. You can save a few bucks if you do a two year.

I wouldn't mind paying what I paid so much if it was for a one time fee. But an annual payment at that rate is ridiculous. I use Maine Trailer Registrations: Register Your Trailer in Maine for our stuff. Since your already titled in NYS, you keep the title there and get registered and tagged in Maine. The registration will have a Scarborough, Maine address since you have acquired a "business interest" there.
Just give them a call and they'll answer any questions or concerns you have.

Just as a side note for you guys worried about registering your trailers in another state every airplane I have flow for the last 20 plus years has been registered in Delaware. These are for companies all over the country with the airplanes or companies owning them based in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, ect. They have very lax registration laws and favorable taxation. We just pay a broker in DE to set up a LLC and done. We have a PO box address in Wilmington, DE and get our mail forwarded to us a few times a month.

If our legal dept. is comfortable doing this with 20 million dollar airplanes plus I would not worry about your $5,000 trailer.

We do the same thing with all boats that displace over 7 tons. Its a federal thing they call Documentation. By doing so you have no title and in turn pay no sales tax which can save $7,000 or more on many of the transactions I do. Its a one time $150 or so fee and you are done forever. Its even transferable. In lue of a title you now have a Federal Documentation Registration Form legal in all states and International Waters.

the place i looked into in Maine is called the staab agency, real cheap but i think i heard someone say that NY state has put somthing in legislation making it illegal , but the state police are the only ones enforcing it.

Kansas.....Personal Property Tax--------- now at $38 annually
State Registration Tag-------- now at $24 annually

11 year old tandem 8M 6 x 12 non-commercial trailer that I
bought new. I don't think "they" differentiate between
commercial and non-com. I use it about 4-6 times per year for
personal reasons. The way our law reads, you'd be taxed if
were towing a grocery cart. But there is no inspection.

7000# bumper pull trailer $100.50 tfor 2011. I won't use it till April, so at least it will be pro-rated when I do register it then.

I'm not sure this still is the case. I had read they are changing this, and my dad just registered his trailer this week for the same reason. He was doing it every April 1st.

The web site still states it is pro-rated

I think the same for motorcycles now also. I registered a motorcycle I bought in mid September and had to pay the full year. I didn't know until I went to register it.

Leave it to NY to take something simple and make it hard and so confusing it's no longer clear.

Well, I certainly don't have anything to lose by waiting till I need it to register it. It's not like I'm going to spend $100 now because somebody thinks I might not save $25 by waiting.
