Oatmeal, serving suggestions

I prepare 'Old Fashioned' Oatmeal in a double-boiler. Thus prepared Oatmeal is easier to eat daily.

I use '0' cholesterol, '0' sugar Almond 'Milk' on my Oatmeal along with varying dried fruits and chopped nuts from the grocery store bakery aisle. No added white sugar for me.

Walmart's house brand Old Fashioned Oatmeal is better than the Quaker Oats equivalent.

I used to be able to control my cholesterol with diet. However, now that I have achieved 68-1/2 years I need to take a daily prescription statin pill, which knocks the chlosterol numbers way down.

My very favorite oatmeal is with about 2-3 tablespoons each of butter and brown sugar! Guess that wouldn't help much with lowering cholesterol?

I like oats!

But I don't enjoy "MUSH". So once the oats are stirred into the boiling water, They never feel a spoon until they are spooned into the serving bowl.
You have to work out the water ratio, and can tell when the water gets low by the sound and by looking. The oats won't burn unless all the water is gone! Pay attention. ;-)

I like to put fruit and raisins in once the oats have firmed up enough so the fruit doesn't sink to the bottom. A pinch of salt is needed to bring out the sweetness of the fruit.
A good sprinkle of Grapenuts prepared cereal adds a welcome nutty ness. As does starting out with a tablespoon of Wheatena in the water as it's brought up to boil. (You can stir that! ;-)

Yumm, This is making me hungry, I think I'll go make up some OATS!

Butter is almost 100% cholesterol. Butter has higher cholesterol than bacon.

Steel cut oats, a little cinnamon and some raisins. I put a pinch of salt in the water when preparing the oats. A touch of pure organic honey or agave necter with the cinnamon and raisins gives it a nice flavor. Fresh strawberries or peaches in season and a splash of almond milk is also good.

You and I are on the same wave link. Years ago I gave up regular oatmeal for steel cut oats. Steel cut oats haven't been steamed and maintain their full goodness. I eat them almost every morning. I always add whole roasted almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seed meal and cinnamon. Toppings are always some kind of berry or grapes with a dollop of butter. I like to make several days worth and gently reheat a bowlful for breakfast. As for sweetener, I chop a few dates and add them during the cooking process. If I don't eat oats every day I feel like I'm under nourished.

Hey, you gave me some good ideas for more toppings, thanks!

Will check out the "steel cut" oatmeal, all I have right now is the standard Quaker Oats in the cardboard cylinder. There not bad but get boring every morning. Also have to watch them or they get like paste, I like them on the firm side.

Like the fruit topping suggestions. I eat oat granola bars, I might try to incorporate some of those ingredients in my oatmeal.

Thanks,
Q

Don't eat the flavored stuff in the packets...it's full of sugar and not near as good for you as the real thing.

I like to add frozen blueberries or some raisins to mine. Or, just a little unrefined sugar and cinnamon. Mmmm, good thing I just ate lunch, or I'd be really hungry right now! :)

I have oatmeal everyday. I buy oatmeal, flax seeds, and red mill has a 10 grain and 5 grain hot breakfast. I will also mix in some pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and or raisins. I also will mix in musel, which has a lot of the same and apples. I do not use the same ratio twice it keeps it fresh. I also use a bit of raw sugar on top microwave it for 1 min, and its done. I have been eating it for a few years now and I look forward to it. On saturday/sunday we will do pancakes etc but during the week its all that oatmeal mix.
