Another angle...Gastric bypass surgery is becoming more and more common for the people that have the money or insurance to cover it. And there's another procedure that involves banding the stomach. That's one way around dieting or lifestyle change.

George...what are your thoughts on those procedures? Have you had any patients that have had it done? They seem like a dangerous quick fix to me. As the patient gets older, don't nutrient needs change? I see more and more attention lately towards the surgery.

Good Mornin Rob,

BTW your catfish sounds good, to bad your so far away ! ;)

Yeah cooked catfish doesn't ship as well as your maple syrup(but just as good in these parts!!). If we get together at Eddies place again this year, maybe you can make it down. Stef wasn't hip on catfish but liked the way I cooked it. I wasn't sure she believed it was catfish at first. ;)

...

A friend at work got the LAP band. He has lost 110ish pounds in less than a year. He tried to diet and exercise and I think was doing well. But it was a struggle for him. I think he could have done it but he thought not so he had the surgery. Its not easy to get done and had to jump through a lot of hoops but it has worked for him.

After the two BBQ pork with slaw sandwiches, hush puppies and fries for lunch from Allen and Sons, I am starting to resemble Southern Obesity. It certainly is a tradition. :D

Later,
Dan

Not really, because the banding makes you have to diet because you simply cannot eat as much as you used to. It's a little hard for me to understand people doing that, but our younger daughter did it, and did lose a lot of weight.

Just wondering out loud, Bird, does she not have the urge to eat...many more times a day, (even though smaller portions)? Or did the urge just go away altogether?

That's an interesting article from Egon about Alabama insurance. I personally don't think it out of line. But...where does the line stop? What about possible genetic connections in your family for diseases not yet diagnosed in you?

I know of two men at work who had the procedure done on their stomachs a few years ago. Initially they lost a lot of weight but they have since gained most of it back. Seems like it can be defeated if you eat small amounts of high calorie foods very often. Can't imagine going through that procedure and then purposefully defeating it.

Well, it looks like Al Roker, (TV Today Show weatherman who had the gastric bypass done), lost a good deal of weight after the operation but watching the show the other day, may be putting on a little weight...

I really don't know. It's been quite awhile since she had it done, she lost a lot of weight, but has gained some of it back, but not nearly as much as she lost.

I think very little of Alabama's new insurance policies for it's state workers. I beleive it is a way to start limiting and cutting back on the coverage of the state employies that find them in a state or being overweight and in the end would wind up being a means for discrimination against them in the future. I am sure that the state and insurance companies would say no that they have the best interest in mind for their employes. If they do have the best interest in mind for their employes then why don't they initiate a exercise program for their employes something that all employes could participate in and it would be a benefit to all. If their intent was to embarrass, and ostersize their overweight employes then I think their plan would be a terriffic plan for that. I listened to a hearing where Richard Simons testified in DC and he had the suggestion of making sure the kids in school all had in their school day a phisical ed class, I know people make comments about his sweating to the oldies type exercises but if you think about it I don't beleive it's that bad of an idea. Who don't like music and how many that listen to music that they like don't start patting their foot or having some sort of movement with the music. I beleive sitting in front of the tv and snacking is the worst habit a person can get into, I know if I start watching a good movie and have a bag of cookies or a bag of potatoe chips beside me at the start of the movie that by the end of the movie they will almost all be gone so I won't have any around me to start with and personally I am not a big fan of tv anymore other than the bad news that we need to keep up with our cable doesn't carry much worth watching anyway.
