Thats a good idea, but I'd like to keep the railing-to-roof area free from obstructions so that filming can be done without having a post in the way when changing directions.

Graded threaded rod is avail from McMaster-Carr. Also comes in stainless but that is not as strong as alloy steel. You could always go up a size or two though.

See Eddie's previous post for the web add.

OK, I made a little progress on the deck today. This is the first day this week I've had a few minutes to spare, so I'm glad I was able to get anything done. My helper and I got the posts set and plumbed up as straight as possible. It really is a pain trying to get them straight when the posts have so many curves themselves.

I've been making some steady progress on my observation deck, but I've mostly been working in the dark so I haven't had a chance to take many pictures. I finally got in some daylight work today so I figured I'd post some updated pictures.

I still have some more work to go on it, but I should have it functionally safe by next weekend. I still need to add railings to the stairs and balusters to the deck railing and should be good to go. I haven't added any x-braces to the deck yet, but it feels solid so far. I will still add some bracing.

Overall it looks very good. I like how you put the posts for the railings on the inside of the joists. That's clean, simple and strong. How far up is the deck? The ladder makes it hard to tell, but it doesn't look like 8ft.

I wouldn't have used joist hangers on the stairs, or notched them like you did. You might be fine, but I'm afraid that what you have done will lead to cracking and issues in a short amount of time. Simpson makes an angled joinst hanger that works great for stairs, and there are other brackets that are just to hold them in place. Since the stairs are leaning up against the platform, there is no need to support the bottom of the stairs, you just want to hold them in place. By notching them like you did, you reduced their strength without gaining anything.

Thanks for the update and pictures. I'm excited to see the roof on it.

I did see the truss bracket at the store before I put the stairs on, but I completely forgot about it when I went to hang the stairs. I had a couple of extra joist hangers, so I used them. I hope that the stairs hold together well for me, I guess we'll see.

Here is an update to how the tower looks now, its about 98% complete. All I need to do is build a ladder to the top and I think that I'm going to put plywood around the top deck to use as space for advertising.

The design has changed a bit since I first started, but I think that it has turned out really good!

I also attached a picture of it getting some use before the roof got put on.

Thanks for the update. It looks like a great place to watch them race and be out of the way. Now I'm wondering how you are going to keep everyone off of it?

Good job,
Eddie
