He probably wanted to try plowing this way so the "high" tire would have a little less traction than the one in the furrow bottom. That way he wouldn't have to keep riding the one brake. (I HAVE plowed with an 8n)

Boy, we are drifting from the topic now!! If you had to ride a brake while plowing other than turning at the end of the field you didn't have your plow adjusted properly. A properly tuned plow distributes the load evenly and the tractor easily drives straight in the furrow.
