What is off road diesel going for where you are?

I'm in South Central Oklahoma and it was 93 cents at the pump a few days ago.

Ours is dyed red and claims to be high sulphur content.

Anyone having diesel delivered? If yes, how does price compare to off road pump prices? Any minimum quantity, volume discount?

Patrick,
I have a 300 gallon tank here and a 200 gallon tank at the other place. Just got them filled and it was 98 cents for off-road. There is a 100 gallon minimum or they charge a $20 charge for delivery. No discount unless you agree to purchase over 2000 gallons a year. It's only a couple cents though so not really worth worrying about. I have asked the question is it different numerous times to different drivers and dealers and everyone of them has told me that it is the EXACT same fuel exact it has the dye added to it.

We save about a quarter a gallon buying a minimum of 150 gallons per delivery. Our dealer setup a 160 gal. tank about a month ago.

Mutt et al, Thanks for info guys. I assume delivered fuel in the 200-300 gal range would be cheaper than at the pump (93 for me). Does the dealer charge to set you up with a tank and or is there a minimum annual fuel consumption required to get to keep the tank? I am new at this stuff and didn't know any better so I stood for hours in heat and humidity Saturday to bid on a tank at an auction. Got the 300 gal on stand for $90. I made 7 trips up ladder with 5 gal jug to pour fuel in. Got new hose and nozzle and 10 micron dirt and water stopping filter (Golden rod). Has plastic filter holder/cover with petcock drain. I need to get elbo so I can get filter vertical, horizontal now.

I'll be calling around for bulk delivery prices. As I have a circular drive around my shop bld with two state hwy driveway entrances I might be able to get a delivery truck to just stop in and top me off when passing right by on the hwy anyway. Should make them feel better about delivering a small quantity (under 300 gal).

Out in these parts folks aren't so rigid and rule bound as in the city so maybe if I wasn't in a hurry and would accept delivery in a week or so when they were going by me that would work out for both parties. A lot of business is still done on a verbal agreement around here. A handshake is a formal contract. Number of years parties have done business with no more than a phone call or at most a handshake seems to be a point of pride and source of bragging rights.

Just today, totally out of the blue, the construction supervisor for a contracting corp stopped by to enquire about renting a spot to park equip while putting in rural water lines (yes, we too will have rural water avail soon) He said he would trade for it as in doing work for me with their equipment or pay by the month. I have the space so we shook hands and they will give me 100 bucks a month for about 5 months or so to park a backhoe a trailer etc. near my shop. It might not seem like a lot but I took early (read smaller) retirement so it means more nights out with my sweetie and some materials to build home made implements with. Our formal contract? I scribbled a line or two on the back of his business card and signed it. He needed something so his boss, in the CITY would feel comfortable.

If I too can save a quarter per gallon that would be great. Diesel at 73 cents! Oh by the way, drivers aren't petroleum engineers. The state enforcement guys have shown up at cattle auctions and stuck a sniffer up the tailpipe of PU trucks. They can bust you if they detect indications that you have used off road fuel. Even if the transgression was in the past and only a small residual is left, they can sniff it. This being a TRUE FACT not an URBAN or RURAL legend, there must be something about the dye that is very detectable if that is the only difference.

The feedstore pump where I got my off road diesel was clearly marked "HIGH SULPHUR CONTENT DIESEL". Is that an obsolete left over sign from a bygone era?

Patrick,
The guys don't charge a dime for the tanks. As far as off-road fuel goes they cannot charge you for using off-road fuel if you used the off-road fuel off-road. At my place I have an old 6.9 diesel pickup that we use just for around the ranch. If I wanted to run it on the road all I would have to do is use the tank of off-road and then fill up with on road fuel. Even if they detected the original off-road and you can show where you were off-road it's not an offense.

As far as urban legend do you personally know of anyone that has ever been convicted of this driving a pickup. I know guys that have been stopped with trucks but I have never met anyone who was actually fined for using off-road fuel. You hear alot of well so and so, but never any actual cases that you personally know.

Patrick,
I just called a friend of mine who is a state trooper here in Iowa. He said that there is to his knowledge no such thing as a snuffer for your tailpipe to detect if you are using off-road fuel. He said it would be impossible with all the additives and stuff that people put in their fuel there is no way they would ever even make a case. He said the only time that they will ticket someone is when they pull up the red dye fuel. He said they never check pickups and occasionally will check a big rig. As far as checking at cattle auctions, etc. he said that is clearly a violation of that person's rights and in court such a check would never hold up. In order to check your fuel tanks you have to give them permission or they have to have some kind of evidence that you are using off-road fuel. That's from the horse's mouth so take it for what you will.

I know of a couple of truck drivers actually fined for using off-road fuel on the highway. But this was with the fuel found in the tanks. Fuel extracted from the tanks and dye found. Bingo fined. Not sure of the amount as this was a couple of years ago.

Jeez Richard. You replyed back to your post faster than I could. They check for the Off-Road fuel more in the winter time here in NH. Not sure the frequency of stops to fuel checks. Most of the time it is axle weight checks or in the case of a beligerant driver, anything and everything.
4 of my in-laws drive truck or just retired from driving. By in large they say the DOT troopers are just doing their jobs, but every once in a while you get someone that is trying to make a name. But that is the case in most industries.

Rich,
I know they check truckers alot but I'm talking about pickup trucks. I have yet to meet anyone that has even been checked much less ticketed.

Cowboydoc, Gee I wish I had read this post before responding to the previous. I don't actually know the guy claiming to have been fined based on mileage. I was just talking with him when we were both at the feed store buying off-road diesel. Clever those conspirators!

I think what you report for IOWA(a four letter word), is quite civilized, prone to cheating, but civillized and logical nevertheless. I wish all regulation were so civilized and logical, we wouldn't need so many lawyers.

What part of Iowa are you in. My mother-in-law is in Dubuque (graduate of Ames) and we will probably visit her in early August (burning on-road diesel!). Should be just warmed up enough by then.
