Off-road diesel harder to ignite?

At my rural property, I use off-road from a 55 gallon drum. I have the tractor at my commercial property right now, and there is a gas station about 2/10 mile away, so I just drive up there and fill from the pump. Absolutely no difference in starting or performance.

Same here. I use 55 gal barrals of off road fuel and start with no problem.

Last year I worked as the fuel man for a dirt moving contractor.

I got to know the guy who delivered to our bulk tanks pretty well and he said that the distribution company only had undyed low sulfer diesel.

When they go to fill up their trucks, it is the drivers responsibility to turn on the dye pump.

There is absolutely no diffrence between non-dyed and dyed diesel, unless it is specifically high sulfer.

I used pump diesel for the first month until I found out how to get off road, dyed diesel. I see no difference whatsoever in my starting time. Just a second or two and she's a purring. John

I think you are refering to which type of diesel.....#1 or #2. I can't recall which, but one or the other is a little bit harder to start..... has a lower Cetane value.

I suppose it depends on how the distributer mixes the fuel. In climates that don't get cold/freeze, they prob run one or the other. In cold climates, it's a mix between 1 & 2. I just can't recall which one is for cold weather use.....

Before winter, I usually "dope" my fuel tanks in the tractor(s) that I'll be using for snow (if I get any). Same w/ the C8000 Ford (3208 Cat).... add some Cetane boost.

No all diesel has min cetane round 40 it's same as on road except dye in my area some areas still use high sulfur for off road and it's just that high sulfur vs low sulfur.. purely mental i'm sure.. tho it could be lower grade aka lower cetane if ur diesel's a DI vs IDI it could affect starting diesel fuel in usa varies so much it could be anything realy.

The tank actually says "#2 off-road dyed diesel" on it... I've gone back and forth now a few times, I'm pretty certain the BX cranks longer on the off-road stuff, so I'm guessing this isn't just dyed on-road diesel, but is the high-sulfur stuff which appears to be a touch harder to light-off. Runs the same...

On-road diesel is 'supposed' to be low sulfur. The off road can be either, but here is usually high sulfur. My tractor starts the same with either. John
